One of our hydraulic repairers just gave me this to use in my kettle to drain into a cube and filter out hop debris.

The beauty of it is if it gets blocked up I can turn off the tap, remove the screen and rinse it in boiling water then replace and keep draining.

Not sure how good it will work but I'm keen to give it a try.

That looks pretty tidy ... did the hydraulic repairer guy tell you what it is called & where you might get one from?

I'd imagine it would get blocked pretty quickly (well, it would on my setup), but good to try. A nice idea though, interested to know how it goes.

Do you have a replacement screw thread without the filter, as there might be times you just want to remove the filter altogether (if it was blocking up too much for instance)?

@ RobH..No he didn't but I will find out where and how much.

@ kaiser...I'm sure you could get a replacement cap without the filter. Will check it out.

It's an inline dirt trap and you have it mounted upside down.

It goes with the trap at the bottom so that debris sits down there.

Get em from irrigation shops.

These are fairly common in the water industry...in some towns where they had no or little water treatment, these would be installed before your water meter...we referred to them as dirt boxes...any water supply shop will have or would be able to get access to these...

It's called a line strainer, us plumbers use them on a whole range of things eg: just before a water meter to strain out any debris in water lines. Any Reece or trade link store will have them readily available.

Well just a bit of an FYI....When I used this filter the first time with hops thrown in loosely it blocked up straight away and I had to remove the filter.

However last night I added all my hops in a hop sock and when draining into the cube this filter worked great to filter out hotbreak that I usually manage to suck into my cube, due to the exposed element not allowing a very efficient whirlpool.

I could see nice clear wort flowing slowly down my hose into the cube and was able to tilt the urn and get almost all of the wort into the cube.

So worth a try for those who have the same problem I do.

@Kaiser..The filter is removable if you do get a blockage mid drain as I had to last time with the hop debris.

they are called a brass "y" strainer i have them at my shop for about $15 i think you will find they will clog up pretty quick

I've cleaned 100's of those buggers, I think you will find it will block quickly with hops. It takes very little to to give hydraulic systems strife.

It did block quite quickly with hops in my wort but did a great job of filering out hotbreak when I used hop socks. probably the least amount of break Ive had in a cube in my last 6 Biabs.

i suppose what you have to remember, the "maximum" about of junk that thing can filter out at any one time is what can be contained in the strainer screen itself, my estimate 50g of trub/hop debris...

is it a lot of work to keep out 50g of trub/hop debris? in my opinion, far too much effort, you would need to keep cleaning it every couple of minutes for it to actually be effective. Or get a MUCH LARGER one with sufficient capacity to carry a useful amount of junk.

What I noticed was that it blocked almost all of my hotbreak and Im talking about hop break draining into the tap from the last 4 litres or so onwards of wort that drained through, as I dont get good whirlpools.
The wort was trickling out of the other end and the filter didnt block up at all. Usually I get around 1 " of break in the bottom of my cube. This time Ive only got about 5-10 mm. It worked for me.
