Stainless is stainless. When I welded or plasma cut, the only time I passivated was to remove the weld colour/ blemish. Wash all contaminates. Brew on.

Ripped this straight of the web

Self-passivating steel, also known as stainless steel, is a ferrous alloy that forms a thin, protective layer of chromium-iron oxide on its surface when exposed to oxygen:

  • How it works
When chromium in stainless steel is exposed to air, it reacts with oxygen to create a passive layer that protects the steel from corrosion and rust. This layer is self-healing, meaning it reforms if the surface is damaged.

  • Composition
Stainless steel is made of iron, carbon, and chromium. Other metals, such as molybdenum and silicon, can also be added to the alloy to provide additional support.

  • Passivation treatments
Stainless steel can be passivated through a process that involves cleaning the surface to remove contamination and scale, and then exposing it to an environment with enough oxygen to form the protective layer. The passivation process can be done using nitric acid or citric acid
