I'm about to brew a half-batch of about 10L and have a sachet of US05 ready to go. The Mr Malty pitching calculator says I only need half the sachet for my half batch, which makes sense. So:

- would I be overpitching to use the whole sachet, and can this overpitching cause any problems?
- if I use half the sachet, how would I store the remainder for my next brew?

Thanks :)

The main effect of an overpitch is foam ejecting out of the airlock. Been there, did that, full batch, foam bath!

For a half batch in a normal sized fermenter, the aggressive foaming shouldn't be an issue. I'm not sure about any other flavour, etc issues. There may be negative effects, but I will leave that to someone else to suggest.

If you use only half the sachet, then you could either roll the lip of the pack a few times and use a peg to secure it and slip it into a zip-lock baggie (or just put it into a sanitised mini zip lock baggie) - refrigerate it either way - or you could make a starter or similar.

Cheers - Fermented.
