Searched for this topic couldnt find any satisfactory answers... Should have asked Gerard when he was out.

So its about 1 drop in a spray bottle.

1. Spray all over the surface of the fermentor, leave for atleast 20 mins, a rinse may not be necessary, but will this wreck the effect of Idopher if I do so?

2. The inside of the bottles put it on spread spray, and give a couple of squirts, leave for atleast 20 mins, and rinse, correct?

3. Do this for all utensils before use and leave for 20 mins correct? Will rinsing once again ruin the idophor effect?

Cheers in advance guys....

And admin sorry for starting so many threads I am not a post whore.

the quote ESB's website.

"Dilute 1:1000 to give a 12.5 ppm solution (i.e. 10ml per 10 liters the cap has a capacity of 10ml) When used at this concentration, no rinsing is required. Just air dry the equipment. Allow 20 min exposure to sanitize all equipment. Safe on all glasses, plastic copper and stainless steel equipment. Sanitizing effectiveness is gone when amber colour dissappears."

Excellent stuff. I read quite a number of good articles about it and have had no problems or infections. ;)

I use iodophor too - very happy wth it.

I am very inefficient (in comparison) the way I use it. I just fill up my fermenter to the 10 litre mark and add a cap full of iodophor. Then I shake the fermenter up and down (with airlocks, sediment reducers etc inside). That way you know you will get good coverage. For bottles I make up 30L of the solution (3 cap-fulls) in the laundry tub and just soak a case and a half of bottles in there at a time. Again, less efficient than using a spray bottle, but this stuff is not that expensive and you only need a tiny amount. I bought a 1L bottle around a year ago and I am not even half way through it. Top stuff, it would take some effort to make me use something else.

Actually that sounds like some really good ideas TD. I have heaps of Pink lady so will get through that before using it on the fermentor though.

Yeah, I just soak everything in the laundry tub - bottles, little aussie bottler, crown seals, the lot! Never had any bad bottles. :)

Being a unit dweller have outdoor laundry and no doubt one of the old women in the block would through a fit about it and cause shit, I am getting a 25 litre storage bin for my initial napisan bottle rescue mission, see my loosing all that beer thread, so that can do instead :)

i've just started using Iodophor, I was wondering how to clean the bottles efficiently, thanks T.D.

I was going to mix 10lt in the primary, sanitise, then do a bottle to bottle transfer after a bleaching, a bit time consuming though.

i'll go with T.D's tub wash i think. :)

cheers

I have been putting around half a cap per 2L.. I think I'll have to start using less seeing the bottle is almost half gone, great stuff though - never had a problem with it.

I wash the fermenters out using pink stain, then give a go over with the idophor and give it a rinse out with boiling water through the tap and threads and it's done.

Yes, it is a great no rinse sanitiser.

On brew day, I make up a 4 litre solution in a bucket, everything that needs sanitising is popped in for a soak. Fermenter lid, tap, oring and airlock go in, after 10 minutes, the lid and tap are pulled out, a litre or so goes in the fermenter, some poured out the thread, tap put in, lid screwed on, swished around so that every surface is wet, do this a few times over 15 minutes, drain back into bucket and ready to go. No hot water rinses.

The bucket has a mark at the 4 litre point so filling is quick and easy, and a syringe is used to accurately measure the iodine out. At the end of brewday the solution is chucked out. The stuff is so cheap, no need to keep it.

This topic has come up quite a few times, if you do a search under iodine or idophor you will find a few other threads that discuss contact times and give links to articles.

Edit:
Remember that it is a sanitiser, not a cleaner. Use your regular cleaning proceedure, rinse well, then use the iodine solution last, allow correct contact time, drain and use the item.

Pint of lager I tried Idophor but all I came up with was vague references, probably should have tried Iodine though.

I agree with pint of lager. Great sanitiser not a good cleaner. My pick of the POSITIVE for iodophor is that it will generally stain any poorly cleaned areas. Good way to look for residual malt/protein. Needs to be used quite concentrated to do this though.

try Iodophor.

I think the general rule for dilution of iodine based sanitisers is, if you can see the colour of the iodine in the water you dilute it with, it is right to use.
20 minutes should be fine

As I posted in another thread about this stuff I would still like to know at what ratio you wou mix Iodine and phosphoric acid to make your own iodophor.

johnno

Johnno,
Probably only need 0.1% phos. If you know the % of the phos you have you can easily work it out. A "splash" is all you would need in a couple of litres.
cheers

buy a 3ml syringe from the chemist (60c) and use 0.5ml in one of those sprayers bottles

Few questions:
1.) Where do you get the 'stuff'
2.) Is the 'stuff' called Idophor or Iodophor (don't worry, Wikipedia has told me)
3.) How is it different to Iodine - just has phosphoric acid added?

Wikipedia article - maybe someone out there might want to help extend it:

Drew, seeing it is spelt Iodophor, it could be good to edit your first post with the correct spelling. But hey, it's up to you. Might just make it easier for beginners like me to find.

Ooops, okay, I just assumed that seeing you could in phpBB2 you could in this. Sorry guys.. Anyway, there's enough mention in here of Iodophor that it comes up in the search results. ;)

You can get @ your homebrewshop in 250ml bottles for about $7-8, dilute it 1-1000, most use it in a spray bottle and spray all equipment before brewing and the inside of their bottles prior to bottling, highly useful stuff, and sensational value. - Best thing is that its non-rinse.

Still though make sure you use a decent cleaner, the homebrand napisan that I recommended is $2.49 for a fairly big tub, and is IMO a much better cleaner then neopink or brewsheild or a lot of others mentioned on this site and about 20 times cheaper.

Stick with this advice and provided u use it properly and rinse throu
