Ooops, okay, I just assumed that seeing you could in phpBB2 you could in this. Sorry guys.. Anyway, there's enough mention in here of Iodophor that it comes up in the search results. ;)

Still though make sure you use a decent cleaner, the homebrand napisan that I recommended is $2.49 for a fairly big tub, and is IMO a much better cleaner then neopink or brewsheild or a lot of others mentioned on this site and about 20 times cheaper.

Is that just to clean the fermenter? Or all bits and pieces? Plus I'm guessing you do a good rinse afterwards.

With Idophor you dont need to rinse this is mainly what people spray ALL their equipment with before use to sanatise - needs about 20 mins after applying to work.

And easiest thing to do is to make sure your fermentor is clean with no chunks on easiest thing is to wash it straight after you empty it rinse ur tap, little bottler valve ect, chuck all your bits into the fermentor 2 spoonfuls of homebrand napisan stir around, leave for anywhere from 1 hour to overnight, then rinse all bits thoroughly with cold water.

Then when ready to use again repeat idopher step.

Use your favourite cleaner to clean every piece of brewing gear. Pull all taps out, o'rings, grommets and airlocks and give them a soak and wash. Use a toothbrush to get into the grooves of threads to thoroughly clean them. Use a soft cloth to wash all surfaces. Rinse well and then inspect in strong light for any unwashed surfaces.

Drain and air dry if not reusing immediately. Just prior to your next use, rinse to remove any dust then sanitise everything.

Good cleaners are sodium percarbonate, machine dishwashing powder, neopink and unscented bleach (do not use bleach on stainless steel). Follow safety directions and don't mix chemicals. Just because one does a good job, doesn't mean that two at the same time is better. This can be dangerous.

Good no rinse sanitisers are 70% ethanol, iodine, phosphoric acid and hydrogen peroxide.

People in rural areas that have dairies can get hold of cheap good food grade cleaners and sanitisers. Another readily available source of iodine is Betadine from the chemist. Buy the brown bottle, not the blue bottle, 500ml of 10% w/v povidone - iodine, under $20. 2.5ml per litre with contact time of 10 minutes will knock out 99.9% of bugs.

Iodine is a gas. It is bound to a carrier molecule so that it can be supplied as a liquid. Once it is bound to the carrier molecule, the name changes. The iodine breaks away from the carrier molecule and is then available to sanitise your brewgear. If a solution is made up and allowed to stand in a bucket, the characteristic pale orange brown colour fades over a day or two as the iodine evaporates. Make a fresh solution on brewday, then discard it.

Breweries follow a regime of cleaning and sanitising. They keep alternating different cleaning products so that any bug that is around does not build up immunity. Breweries use caustic soda for cleaning as well as peracetic acid for sanitising.

Your regime will depend on what products you can obtain readily and what you feel comfortable using.

Edit: use unscented bleach

Excellent explanation I hope you end up going commercial one of these days as if ur beers as good as ur knowledge they must be a treat!

Few questions:
1.) Where do you get the 'stuff'
2.) Is the 'stuff' called Idophor or Iodophor (don't worry, Wikipedia has told me)
3.) How is it different to Iodine - just has phosphoric acid added?

Wikipedia article - maybe someone out there might want to help extend it:

Drew, seeing it is spelt Iodophor, it could be good to edit your first post with the correct spelling. But hey, it's up to you. Might just make it easier for beginners like me to find.

Cheers mate. BTW, I didn't mean rinse the Iodophor, just the napisan, but you covered this. One question on it though, you say, 'then rinse all bits thoroughly with cold water'. It would be fine to do the ferm with just the garden hose yeah (seeing the next step is to do the sanatising with the Iodophor)?

EDIT: Was asking about the garden hose NOT the garden house. :(
