This year the ANAWBS committee present to you the mash paddle style for 2011 - Irish Red Ale.

An easy-drinking, malty experience with caramel and toffee, balanced with roasted dryness.

Check out the BJCP guidelines for Irish Red here: http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style09.php

Here's a few AHB references. If anyone has links, please add to this thread.

Complete ANAWBS show information and style guidelines will be posted on the website in the next month or so.
This is an all grain competition only, part of ANAWBS (the Australian National Amateur Wine and Beer Show).

Keep your eye out for the next announcement (dates etc...).

EDIT: If anyone has suggestions for beers they would like to see included this year please let me know ASAP, and I'll see what I can do.

Cheers,
Tim.

Irish Red? Boo! Too plain!

---

Can we arrange a culmination of beer classes, eg just Porters, which can include Brown, Robust and Baltics? This way all beer categories should be able to be covered in the comp?

Other than the above, keep up the good work on this competition. I believe Quantum Brewer started a feedback thread along similar lines too?

Cheers!

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

looking forward to entering the comp and judging again this year but no mash paddle for me I don't think

I feel that a good Irish Red is one of the more difficult beers to brew well. So this would make a great choice for any comp. All to often it is easy to throw quantities of hops into our beers and call them great.

So come on brew a nice buttery smooth toffee red.

mmm true its usually the simple beers without hops for the brewers or beers faults to hide behind, that are the hardest to brew well and to style.

Sounds like a good challenge.

Ah, the redheaded stepchild of the brewing family ^_^

And from memory it was the style you wanted to make when you asked for a few tips on brewing many years ago.

Im not suprised you popped up here mate :)

I have had a few questions already, so here are some answers:

Details about the beer styles and what they are judged as are found here http://www.anawbs.org.au/images/forms/beer...uidelines11.pdf

The USA4 - American-Style Black Ale is also known as a Black IPA, I found some draft guidelines for BJCP using this heading so I followed suit and adapted the guidelines and specifications as well as I could.

California Common was last years Mash Paddle beer but does not appear in this years list since feedback showed more interest in brewing other classes, whereas the Mash Paddle is an exception since most entries are brewed specifically for the Mash Paddle. If there is enough interest in this class it could be included next year.

Some classes may seem a bit specific and there are some beer classes that do not appear at all, this is done to make judging easier, if classes do not have enough entries to be judged properly then they must be changed or removed. As it is we rely on volunteers over a single weekend and have to make things work.

Cheers, Tim.

Hi Tim

That link doesn't seem to be working. According to my computer the source file doesn't exist.

Any expansion on the drop off points this year? Perhaps a few local homebrew shops rather than a single drop off point at a business that is rarely open.

Cheers

Hey mate, that would be my web hosts fault. Had a problem overnight with the server but it's back online now.

Can't help you with the drop off points as I'm not on the committee but the website hasn't been fully updated yet.

There's a survey link on the www.anawbs.org.au homepage if you want to provide some feedback.

BTW, I'm not involved in anawbs anymore except for looking after the website.

Cheers
