Cost Of Living In Tassie

Hey Tassie Brewers,
Would you mind answering a few questions in relation to the cost of living in Tassie for me, not that I'm wanting to race down there to live, it is just getting so expensive in QLD that I am thinking about looking at alternatives.

1) Average cost Council rates

2) Average cost of petrol

3) Cost of electricity per kw (all your power comes from hydro right?

4) cost of water per kl

5) Cost of car rego

And now for a very vague answer
1 - Sort of depends where you live. Our rates system is not very good, and uses the value of the property and house as a basis for calculating our rates. I pay approx 1300 p/a for rates, with a very generous few % discount if paid by August. I live on the NW coast

2 - Fuel is between $1.15 and $1.25 at the moment, depends where you are. $1.25 in Burnie this morning'

3 - We have 2 types of power payments. Fixed (standard meters) and pay as you go (uses a swipe card)
Fixed cost is 19.6c/kw for light and power and 11.8c/kw for hot water and heating (for heaters over 2.4 kw). There is also a fixed cost of 69c per day for light and 13c per day for hot water.

4 - Don't really know, as we are changing our system for water and sewerage costs. I pay a fixed cost of Approx $150/quarter but who knows what it wil be next year?

5 - My Rodeo diesel is $510/year to register.

6 - Brewing supplies are harder to find down here, and generally more expensive. A few blokes I know get there grain from Queensland, because they can't get it here.

7 - Groceries are generally a little dearer than on the mainland.

Thanks for the insight David, seems you are better off than us bannana benders. My rates are never below $550 now and they are only going up. I just saw our electricity prices are goin to go up $250 a year, Lagerbomb, do you guys use exclusively hydro power ?

We only have one power supplier, Aurora Energy. Nearly all our power is hydro, however we do use either oil, or natural gas, (not too sure), as a back up in summer.
Our electricity prices have just risen by 20%, recently. I used an average of 9 kw/h less this quarter for my bill to be about $150 dearer. We have a large house with 2 adults, and 3 kids (all adullts) and various hangers on. Rarely less than 6 people, so hot water is a big cost, as is heating..

While prices may be higher/lower in Tassie it is one damn beautiful part of the world.

If you can live without the "big smoke" of Syd/Melb/Brissy then Tassie would be a great place to live.

Atleast you can get your grain etc shipped to you via craftbrewer or other retailers.

I lived in Sydney and Wollongong over a 26 year period and still get up to Sydney periodically I still am glad to get back to Tassie for its pristine waters and probably some of the cleanest air in the world. Still a paid up member of Wenty Leagues club so NRL is my game unlike the AFL they play down here. You haven't got the convenience of the big smoke down here but you learn to adjust and the rural lifestyle is magic which more than compensates.
As previously stated the HBS are expensive here for the serious AG brewer so we have our bulk grain and hop club to offset this. Tasmanians like Queenslander's are not that receptive to strangers particuarlly from interstate but after being here for ten years you gradually grow on them. All in all if you want a change of pace in lifestyle come on down.

Seriously, it's a great lifestyle down here. Not sure which other capital cities offer the 1st hour free in their car parks! Check out the Hobart City Council site for some info HCC Not sure if you're familiar with the place, but most things are within a short distance travel wise - plus we don't have to worry about huge traffic delays!

As mentioned, the cost of grain is more expensive than the mainland, but if we can get more AG'ers down here, then hopefully we can drive the price down (or have some BB's to offset).

We also have natural gas down here now, so you can use that for heating, cooking, brewing and hot water if you want. Not sure on the costs associated with it.

If you are in Tassie you associate Banjo's with sausage rolls and awesome meat pies!

I'm down in Lonnie and spent a surreal new years at the casino, strange mix up there.

Not much on the brewing front here but some of the local bottlos have a better range than ever and some cheap too. 3 Monts for $17 up the road and the chimay gift pack with three bottles and glass for under $30. Even the elusive TTL that takes some finding in Melb.

House prices are on the up and up and there is a lot of money going into some of those shacks up at Horley Beach.

The news last week was that the sperm banks on the mainland were running low on the stuff needed to populate Australia so the lads down here have been busy chipping in doing their bit for the good of the country. Looks like the blokes up north aren't "pulling" their weight so the call has gone out to help out down here. Not easy but I guess someone has to do it.
