Straight into fermenter or boil wort? Dumb noob question.

I have tried searching for this answer.
Why do the instructions on cans say to heat can and disolve in hot water then pore straight into the fermenter.
What about the 60 min boil?
Is that just for the hop bitterness addition?

The hot water helps to dissolve the kit and being sugar (or dry malt) in the fermenter. You'd only do the 60min boil if using unhopped malt extract (usually seen in 1.5kg tons as opposed to the 1.7kg flavoured tins) and it's during this boil that you would add hops.

What kit are you using mate?

Also, the goop in the find is very thick, so sitting the tin in hot water for 10 to 15mins helps with pouring it out.

The boil is also to kill nastys and break down proteins when using grains. Not needed when using kits as its already highly processed.

Welcome to the wonderful world of homebrewing!

First thing to understand is that there's NO SUCH THING as a dumb question. If you're asking questions, it means you're thinking for yourself & you're LEARNING - it's all good. We've ALL been there at some point, so you're not alone. Relax!

To answer your question:

Heating the can loosens it's contents so you can get 'em out. Just rinse the can with some boiling water & dump everything into your fermenter, then top it up with cold water 'til you get the right volume. Since you're obviously new to the game, don't worry about anything but sanitation ( 'can't stress this enough!) & temperature that you chuck your yeast in (too hot, you'll kill it, too cold, not much will happen). Use a SANITISED thermometer!

Once you get the first one under your belt, keep reading stuff around here & take small steps & enjoy learning from everything you do (Hey! Drinking beer is FUN, right!?!!?).

Thanks!
So the 60 min boil is for adding hops to unhoped cans or to dry malt extract?

Yep, exactly (there you go - you're already one step ahead of the noobs)! That's the next step on your journey & something you'll want to read more about.

Your rabbit-warren awaits........ :D
