Hi guys this is my 1st post.

I have put down a wheat brew using a liquid malt extract instead of a sugar or dextrose for the 1st time.

Im not sure if it is working. I had to add another sache of yeast as after 24+ hours there was nothing happening, no bubbling and original gravity was still at 1042.

The man in the brew shop here in Goulburn sold me 1x brewcraft baravian wheat, 1x coopers liquid malt extract (wheat style), and 1x wheat yeast ( the one that didnt work i think so i added the one from the lid of the brewcraft bavarian wheat today ) and some hallertou hops.

I added the brewcraft bavarian wheat to the fermenter, then added the coopers liquid malt extract to the fermenter, then added 2 litres of boiling water to the fermenter, gave it a stir, and then added the hops i had steeped.

I then topped it up with cold water and when the brew was at 22 degrees i added the yeast and sealed it.

after 24+ hours, like i said nothing was happening.

have i done everything right? I was told the liquid malt extract would work as a replacement for sugar or dextrose, is this true.

please help me as this brew nearly cost me 40 bucks to put down and i will be very very sad if i cant drink this lovely smelling brew.

cheers.

welcome to the forum davecambo,

sounds like you did everything right, did you aerate the unfermented beer before adding the yeast (adding water from a height usualy does this). Also what temp is it at now ?

Some beers can take a bit longer to start. I put down a pilsner recently that seemed to remain at OG for 4 days. I pitched another yeast and she fired up.

Just monitor it - gravity is the thing - don't worry about bubbles. The extra yeast will probably kickstart it.

Malt extract contains fermentable sugars and so can be used 'in place' of sugar. It's a strange expression really because traditionally beer is made from malt so actually the sugar is 'in place' of the malt, not the other way round. Anyway anal wankiness aside - malt will be less fermentable than simple sugar so you need more to get the same abv. However it also gives more body and more sweetness than simple sugar as not all of it ferments. Kit beer is usually nicer with some extra malt.

You may have to do a bit of a search but I recall a post stating Morgans speciality malt cans are only 50% fermentable.

thanks guys for the replies. the mix is at a constant 22 degrees 24 hours a day. also i poured the water in to the mix from a 2 litrel bottle 10 times from some height causing quite a bit of airation.

and to "tropical brews" thanks but the malt i used was a coopers liquid malt extract. not sure about how fermentable it is but the brew shop guy, and one of my mates tells me it is good to go. time will tell. i know it sure smells good.
