I heard an item on the ABC Country Hour (in SA) about more people home brewing due to the economic crisis

Was sitting in Gloria Jeans with the mrs yesterday drinking a decaf at the local food court and there was one of those big plasma advertising signs nearby with 'rotating' ads. One that kept popping up was a Kmart ad for Coopers kits with a big splurge "Recession? what recession - brew your own beer for 20 cents a glass".
There was a bit in the Courier Mail showing a happy looking couple who run one of those brew your own joints and they reckon business is up fifty percent in the last six months.

Saw a Coopers avert in either Motor or Wheels with black and white photo of an excited looking young chap with a champion hairdo 1950's style. The tagline was "Good hair and Great beer - I never though I'd be able to afford both!" I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see more people brewing, and I've never seen so many empty HB shelves in supermarkets and the like! I went into Kmart the other day only to find about half of the HB section stocked, the rest with the odd can or two standing at the back. Popped into Woolies for something and remembered I needed crown seals - last packet left!

Gentlemen, seems we have a fresh wave of new recruits I dare say...

Just wait till they equalise the excise on alcoholic beverages in the next budget and wine casks go up to $40 then disappear forever. You ain't seen nuffin yet

It's the same around here and Chatswood is a reasonably well heeled area (no Bellevue Hill or Point Piper, that's for sure, but well-off enough that my missus calls Mercs a 'Chatswood Toyota' :D ).

Stock seems to pretty much rush off the shelves. There's always a big empty space where the Coopers PETs were and anything on sale is gone very quickly. Ditto caps, crown seals, etc.

Hopefully, the buyers either know what they're doing or seek help from places like AHB on how to make a good drop. :D

Cheers - Fermented.

Your taste is now in question. :p
I thought somebody would bite :p . Used to live on coffee when I was at uni in the 90s. After suffering terrible abdominal discomfort for years and fears of cancer, ulcers or whatever was causing the pain they scoped me about four years ago and found nothing wrong at all, and gave me a list of things to progressively give up (beer way down list fortunately). Caffeine was top of list and haven't had a twinge since. Give me a coke or a coffee and I'm history but can drink decaf. Yorkshire bitters are very soothing to the mucosa as well.

cmon, beef, lift your game....comment on the fact that he was in Gloria Jeans, but fail to reference the fact he was drinking decaf???

"I wasn't drinking mega-swill, I was drinking lite mega-swill"

 :p

BribieG curls his lip dismissively and takes another swig of his Tasman Gold.

I tried to criticise both in my quote, but couldnt remember how to itlicise! (or, even spell that!)

I understand (tho reject) the mans need to not drink caffine, but I reject completely that there is ever an excuse to be in Gloria Jeans.

McCoffee at its worst.

:icon_offtopic: C'mon - it was a light-soy de-caf latte... ;) (spoken like a true, boring flat white drinker... )

I can just see t poor ole beggar sitting at home, shaking is head and saying....'I hate you guys. Seriously'

On the contrary, five pints of Yorkshire Bitter :icon_drool2: (albeit served in a Lancastrian glass) renders all comments quite humorous

great. So you're the bugger buying all my PETs. Each time I go to KMart, they are always, always sold out of Coopers PETs.

even though I'm kegging, I'm going to start doing batches in bottles too. Just can't seem to find them!

;)

Not me... I have enough and collected quite a bit of 330 ml glass and now working on some more 500 ml glass. Hard, painful work. :D

You can buy bottles direct from the beer factory type places,

Bottles - 330mL Approximately 150 per full brew $60 per full brew

Bottles - 500mL Approximately 100 per full brew $75 per full brew

Bottles - 650mL Approximately 75 per full brew $75 per full brew

probably a lot easier than saving them all. :D

Besides the obvious of drinking the contents, there is also the sneaky Sunday morning way of going to the back of local German, Austrian and Alsace resturants. :)

We need to drink beer even in 'hard economic times'.

It would be interesting to know what the drop out rate will be once things turn around!

I know that since being introduced to AG, I'll never be content drinking commercial beer ever again... (Gee that makes me sounds snobbish! )
