Hi There,

Just did my first Blackrock...

I normally tap off a few ml to check how it is going / taste... In this case the beer seems to have a lot of yeast cake mix at the bottom. I have normally done Coopers kits and seen nothing like this. The bottom is really thick with yeast / malt mex ??

Standard kit + #20 mix HBS (Malt 500g LDM, dextrose 250 G, maltidextrose 250 G)

I am sure this will settle but seems a lot more than usual, is this case with Blackrock kits?

5 days so far - avg temp 18 deg. SG 1038 (This seemed low but not sure if this mid strength beer)

The first 2 days, looked great...like a mini-beer good colour - head... since it stopped bubbling has gone like this....

The top of the beer looks fine..

Thanks

Sounds pretty right to me.

I don't brew kits anymore but all of my current beers look like this until I Cold crash them and the trub packs down.

Means I have to draw two samples to check SG. The first to get the gunk out of the tap, then the second is normally clear enough to take the reading.

How much yeast did you pitch? What type?

Cheers,
D80

Thanks - Kit yeast - all of it (11 g pack?)... Said "Premium Yeast " on the sachet..whatever that means..

Seems alot more action on the bottom than usual... This is an Ale, I thought that they should have more action on the bottom.. but this seems alot more than I am used to....pretty sure it will settle down..
cheers

Hi Guys, bottom still quite cloudy with yeast / action.... about 10 days seems a long time to me...

as a note... HBS said at least 2 weeks in fermentor in general for any brew - is that correct

cheers

I go 2-3 weeks depending on available time to brew. Gives the yeast plenty of time to clean up after its self and matter to drop out.

I don't, but I do cold crash / chill (down to about 1-2 degrees) after 14days or so for a week then keg or bottle.

Cheers,
D80

Never bothered with a secondary, you could try gelatin to clear the beer further as well
