You can treat brass to remove a layer of lead. In the back of Palmer's "How to Brew" there are instructions. You treat them in a solution of peroxide and vinegar i think (off the top of my head). I did this for a couple of the brass fittings i used in my kettle

What's wrong with the masking tape and felt tip pen? :P In all seriousness, common graphic art programs are Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Print on paper with an adhesive backing which you can get from office works or newsagents etc. However they can run when they get wet.
