Yeast extract for vegemite etc

Every now and again vegemite can smell like a brew, very subtle. I know vegemite is made from yeast extract, and there are others like bovril. Do you know how it is made, is just the yeast extract or other products etc. I was look at a world war 1 exhibition and there was a yeast extract tube, must same thing or similar.

Don't know how, but read recently Vegemite was first released in Melbourne some 70 years (more?) ago, anyway, made from used yeast from Carlton & United Brewery.

True story.
