Hi guys,

Just putting some feelers out to see if anyone has a thermocouple for sale that would suit my purpose.

I'm looking for a K or J type thermocouple to finish the final component of my brewery. I have one for my HLT already but need a longer one to reach my mash tun, so therefore it needs to be around 4-5 feet long.

Can have a stainless probe or not, I can make a thermowell if I need to.

Another option is if anyone has some K type extension wire as that would get me out of trouble as well. Not a real lot on ebay at the moment that would suit my purpose, but I'm in no real rush.

Thanks guys. Just send a PM if you have something that might suit.

Cheers, Justin

One of my brothers has a longer one which he doesn't need/want, I never took it off his hands because although my unit can take thermocouples i'am using some other kind RTD or something, don't actually recall but they work great and if theres a prob there plenty of elec eng in the family so I never bothered to worry about learning whats what.

Willing to trade for one or two of your best beers maybe.

Can't remember how long it actually is but its a full stainless probe certainly wouldn't be a whole 4-5 feet more like a foot and half two feet etc. I'am pretty sure you can use any electrical wire to extent it further right? just needs the different wire in the probe part to do the work.

I'll check all that out later and get back to you.

Hey Justin,
I bought 2 or 3 from this eBay seller a while back but found I needed T type  I may still have a couple if you are interested (I can't recall the length and can get back to you). The eBay seller was pretty fast for a HK based one.
Cheers

Thanks for the replies and offers guys, much appreciated.

I'll send you a PM Jayse, although I really need the length so if they are only a few feet they wont be of much use to me unfortunately. The problem with thermocouples is you can only extend them with appropriate thermocouple wire, otherwise due to the nature of how thermocouples work you end up creating multiple junctions (essentially temp sensing points at the joints that have incorrect readings due to the different metals involved). I probably haven't explained it particularly well but basically you can't just extend them with any old wire. Still I'll send you a PM Jayse just in case we can work something out.

I already have one of the same thermocouples that you have linked to Doug (I have the stainless probe one which is working great and easily accurate enough), they are the same as the ones Jaycar stock but unfortunately they are only 3 feet long. One suits my purpose exactly (to the HLT) while for my second application I need a longer one to reach my mash tun.

I'll have a think and see what I can work out. Some extension wire and I'm in business. Will see what I can find.

So still, if anyone has something applicable please let me know.

Thanks again, Justin

Edit: Just had a brain wave! I'll get one of those cheap wire K thermocouples and chop it up..presto...extension wire-2X3feet=6 feet-perfect. Just need to research what solder (if I can use solder) I can use to join it. Stay tuned!

That makes sense, I didn't think of the extra 'junctions' screwing with the readings.

RTDs are more accurate at the temperatures usually used for fermenting ie-50 to +50C. RTDs can be identified as they have three wires, whereas thermocouples have only two. Thermocouples should be extended with the appropriate grade of extension wire or the readings will be off. RTDs can be extended with any type of wire as they are not material dependent.

You can have thermocouples made to order by a number of specialist companies. That way you can have the length of the thermocouple and the length of the leads made to suit your purposes. They also sell extension wire by the meter.
