All the threads here on keggong almost has me convinced - i just need someone to put a couple of last reservations to bed.

1) how long can I keep beer kegged in the fridge? I've heard conflicting reports on this, ranging from a couple of weeks to months. We don't have any seriously big beer drinkers in our house, so 19L will take quite a while to get through.

2) I make a lot of mead. Do you think it would be possible to keg it, chill it without any pressure, and gass it only when its time to dispense? Would I be able to have the best of both worlds by having it both on tap, and still?

I HATE the bottling process, and love the idea of geting it all done in 10 mins!

Cheers!

In response to 1 - I have kept one keg going for 8 months. Pulling a glass here and there. The last was the same as the first - no - it was better. As long as your keg is sealed and gassed and kept cold IMO you can run it for as long as you would like.

In response to 2 - I think this would be no problem. You would need to release the pressure (Kegs have a valve for this) after use to stop from carbonating the mead. Easy to do.

If I were you I would invest. It is so much easier. It is also so much more fun to drink from a tap. Its like a pub in your own house - your friends will love it too.

Yep, I've got a robust porter that has been in a keg for 2 years now. Still about 8 litres left. This particular one was brewed in Melbourne then 6 months later, transported to Perth (didn't have the heart to drink it all or throw it out).

gary.

He he, looking for a discount are we?? ;)

All I can say is look around. Plenty of deals out there for around the $300 mark.

Oh, yes I love the kegs too. I bottled, gave up then bought a keg system a few years later. Now its full steam ahead :D

The excess goes into bottles (PET's, I don't have the same hang-ups about plastic as other do!)

Kegged beer lasts for ages. Even though you don't think you drink much, once you have a keg set up I'm sure your consumption will increase a little and of course your friends will help empty those pesky kegs.

For the mead, plug the gas onto the keg post at the normal pouring pressure, this will fill the head space with the right amount of gas, disconnect and pour away. You'll know when the keg is pressurised as the sound of the gas escaping the bottle through the regulator will stop. I'm taking it mead isn't supposed to have any carbonation (sorry but have no idea what it is)????
