Tooheys Extra Dry

TEDS are great ICE COLD and just smashing them, cant let them warm up though, when I lived on the sunshine coast and hung out with early 20 year olds, bbqs on the beach etc we would just nail them, great getting pissed beers in the warm sunny coast weather.

Now that I started HBing, my thoughts have some what changed..

Have you had a Golden Ale lately....

Only last week for the 2nd time I left half a PINT of golden ale on the table. I used to love the stuff. That is now swill! Though I am going to try it one more time in the bottle! It's being a while but I also love JS IPA... hopefully they have not de hopped that! :angry:

No i havnt tried on in a while but a mate of mine (full AG brewer) did call me recently and told me the last golden ale i made was an absolute delight.....dont like JSGA anymore? i reckon you could clone one thats better

I was more comparing ice cold swill vs swill. I should've added that.

They're ALL RIGHT when slammed down at 0C. However, it's still a pretty shit beer overall.

Off Topic, I remember a few days ago my friend served me a stout we made together, and I was all "hey, this is great at the temperature you served at, it brings out more of the flavour" and he was all "yeah, I did that one on purpose..."

I wish I had a time machine to check out a few suspicions. I arrived in Australia in 77 as an AG brewer and member of CAMRA in the old country and came from a background of drinking not only the great ales such as Courage Directors Bitter and Abbott Ale but also pretty nice lagers like Carlsberg and Stella in the days when they were imported and not BUL. Because of the Vietnam War and other reasons tens of thousands of Aussies had come to live and work in the UK and Aus beer imports were common, including the 750ml oil cans, the likes of Tooths KB, Fosters and Reschs Dinner Ale. And you know what, they stacked up very nicely against the UK and Euro beers.

When I arrived here I eagerly sampled the local XXXX and Carlton (Bulimba breweries stuff relabelled) and it wasn't too bad at all. The beers were all - as we know now - a tad under 5% and I had no complaints.



Then the brewing industry became concentrated into two companies, they obviously dont give a shyte any more about any local beers other than their flagship national brands such as TED XXXX Gold and Tooheys new in the case of Lion, beers all seem to be flocculating down to 4.5% and I bet by the end of the decade they will be well on the way down to 4% and it seems the only way to get a decent beer of international standard nowadays is to drink BUL like Heineken or a specialty brew like LCPA.

Have you tried the sad Fosters Lager lately, if you can find it? How come a reasonable beer like Tooheys Red that was full strength is now 4% ? How could they launch not a bad drop like Hahn Ice (5.2%) and then drop it to 4.2% ??? Ok I know there's more to it than alc by volume but the only thing going for many of these beers was the grain bill. I'm actually looking forward to Coca Cola setting up their new megabrewery on the Central Coast to see if they give the local breweries a rev up. Not holding my breath however. I know this is heresy but at the end of the day I wouldn't actually weep if Fosters got taken over by Inbev or Heineken, we may get access to some better brands.

Coopers seems to have struck a fairly good balance between appealing to the masses, and still brewing decent enough beer. CSA is great.

unfortunately the uni bar only has union discounts on teds... so i end up drinking a bit of it there with mates after uni it is drinkable cold anyway. sure gives me a hell of a hangover compared with home-brew the next day tho...

the uni bar also have jsga on tap, which is good... mmmm ... beer...

Yeah I think a lot of commercial Aussie beers are like that. Crash it down like in the Solo ad, but for gawds sake don't let it get above about 3C or it tastes like horse piss.

I also think a real beer movement will evolve here in Australia, led by small brew pubs, micro-brews and people who brew at home, or at least know how to brew, and won't tolerate the lowest common denominator in a pub beer. Once the current hop and malt shortages are overcome there is no excuse to brew crap.

Victoria seems to be well ahead in the development of the brew pubs, with generally good food and beer, and are becoming a tourist attraction in their own right. I suspect that is because they have a progressive government that has cut a lot of red red tape and encourages tourism. NSW under the current government, beholden to the Hotels lobby via their "donations", is still making it hard for small brewers to get under way.

The Five Islands brewery bar in Wollongong makes a good range of beers, in a great location right on the beach, but lacks atmosphere and good food. I recall Michael Bolt, the guy who set it up had constant hassles with vexatious locals that cost an absolute fortune to deal with. Roll on Esme Bitter, for those in the know.

Anyway I think things will improve as these kinds of businesses become established and the more adventurous trend setters start to discover the taste and enjoyment of real beer. Just how long it takes we can only guess Cheerz Wab

In regards to the dropping alc. content in megaswill beers, have a google and nosy around on how beer and alcohol in general is taxed...

Less % = more profit for companies. Punters will still pay the same for their favourite beach beer regardless if it's 5% or 4%.

I always thought the Government taxed beer on alcohol percentage, or least starting doing it around
the time the breweries began to drop the %.

Yep, tastes even worse IMO but they do knock you around a bit.

Simple reason why TED is so popular - marketing. Every young bloke sees the ads on TV, then instinctively picks up a case of it next time he's doing the grog run. It's almost like it's a premium beer or expensive import. The thinking goes "Nope, I won't get VB or Melbourne this time, I'll splash out and get some good stuff - Extra Dry.".

I agree, tastes like ass....warmed up....

Used to love Extra Dry, then got to the point of it being ok for a hot day, then went to the belief that it is mediocre beer but by far not the worst out there.
Had one at my sister's place the other day and wasn't too impressed.
I suppose it is ok if it is really cold, but let it warm up at all.........ugh!

BAM! Exactly what I was going to write. Possibly some of the most expansive advertising around I'd say. Especially when you throw in their support of university piss-ups. I mean hell, Tooheys has sponsored CSU Bathursts 'Octoberfest' every year I've been there and then theres all the other sponsor items like hats, keyrings, etc that they throw our way at the slightest nudge. No wonder TEDs are popular.

Agreed. Had a case of it with mates as we demonstrated out poorly honed golfing skills. Went down like water and got us hammered. Still, not worth $50 a case. I'd rather spend another ten and go 2 cases of Haagen. Or put down two cheap kits and bits brews. Yeah...think I'll do that...

Same here, for some reason TEDs always knock me about. I'm not a fan of the taste at all either so I go out of my way to avoid them now.

Bribie: I think the reducing % ABV is due to taxes/excises. They can keep the cost of a case the same when the excise goes up with CPI etc if they drop the alcohol an little. Same deal with the 330ml bottles vs 375ml bottles. I think.
