I thought that kit/extract were used interchangeably, but after reading "Tell the Truth" and replies to my brewing depression thread, seems I was wrong.

What's the difference between extract and kit beer?

Kit beer is extract with hops.

Extract is extract - condensed malt (maybe dried) from grain. No hops what-so-ever.

Oh...therefore extract + separate hops = beer kit but with more control?

& what about that dried malt stuff you get at the stupormarket, Horlicks I think it's called? Is that used for beermaking or something else? My dad used to drink it with milk.

Read the label it will have the ingredients listed - some DME, not enough to brew with I would think.

basically yes. with a kit, you can add sugar or extract and you've got beer (eventually)

with extract you've got to add hops and boil it to get bitterness & flavor. so you choose which hops, how much, and how long to boil = much more control.
so you do lose some convenience but you get exactly the beer you want.

Extract + hops && fresh wort kit = way to go then. Till I cross over to the dark side...of brewing! Too late to speak for life, lol. :icon_drool2:
