When I worked on the Railways, not so long ago, they used hard drawn copper wire for the overhead open wire communications and signaling line routes. It was about 2.5mm diam and very hard. It was about as hard as number 8 fencing wire and about as difficult to cut & bend. A lot different to soft drawn copper that is used in normal household and electrical wiring
