Im seriously considering one of the 98128 with some of the solutions (calibration and storage).

Although being based in Gisborne im a little far out from everyone else.....I work in Moonee Ponds if theres anyone close that could pick up for me?

I live in east keilor, so would be happy to act as a middle man for you.

Cheers

 • Vanners - HI9951 x 1
 • peas_and_corn HI 98128 x1 plus solutions

Total: 10 meters

So if my maths are correct that's 18 meters in total as definite, with an extra possible?...

Almost there; must be someone else out there ready to jump in and finish things off!

Hi guys,
I'm not interested ina pH meter but thought I would chime in with some advice, I am an analytical chemist and pH measurement is a big part of my day.
 • Ideally you will calibrate with at least two buffers covering the range of measurement, so for mash/wort 4 and 7. This should be done regularly, we calibrate before each days usage.
 • pH changes with temperature, so a meter with ATC is a big plus, the lower the pH or the higher the temp the less it is affected by temp, however meters are designed for 20°C or 25°C and measuring at 60°C without ATC could cause problems.
 • Probes are delicate bits of kit, they have a fine glass membrane, this should be treated carefully and not touched.
 • High sodium concentrations will effect readings.
 • probes are usually filled with 3 molar potassium chloride (KCl), this solution needs to be maintained. It is also all we use as a storage solution, long term storage can require a special solution. These units look to be more like a field probe and are likely to be different to our probes.
 • a well cared for probe used often will last 1-2 years.
 • Wort will be rough on probes, rinsing with water immediately is a must.
$12 for 230mL of buffer is pretty expensive, how much is it fromthe hydroponics guys?

Taking Glenos' advice on-board, I've amended my order to the 98128 model.

Before I spend/waste the time, has anyone already had a look at their local hydroponics suppliers for prices on buffer solutions?

I just had a look at the cheaper calibration solution, it seems like a good price.
I'm just wondering if it's suitable though (maybe you could shed some light on this Glenos).
The Hanna solution is 4.01 PH and the hydroponic one is 4 PH.

Maybe one of us should collect the meters for the Westies.
Yeah cool, either one will be great! I could pick it up after work one day. Thanks for the offer guys! :D

It should be fine, your calibration wont be perfect but you will not notice the difference. Anyone who thinks they can accurately read pH to two decimal places without a high end probe is lying. At work we report pH to the nearest 0.1 with a measurment uncertainty of ±0.05, this is using a $1000 probe. It is a long life fast response probe with inbuilt Pt1000, but you get my drift.

Thinking of changing my order to 2 x the HI98128 instead of the one HI9951. Have a spare then and would take the total meters to 20, seems to be losing momented when so close. Mind you probable not long and Martin OC might be able to get back in when his budgets reset.
Also is there any idea of cost for replacement probes.

Ok guys

I have been on the phone with the rep today regarding a few things, trying to get this bulk buy wrapped up so that we can place an order.

Firstly I have a price for replacement probes which I am not very impressed with:

HI 99151 (1297D electrode) $304
HI 98128 (73127 electrode) $101
HI 98103 (1270 electrode) $43.50 (This one is irrelevant because no one is getting any of this meter)

All prices are excl. GST and freight.

Basically I asked her to explain why the replacement probes are more than the cost of the meter itself.
Her answer was that the price that we are getting the meters for is much cheaper because we are buying 20 of them.

Secondly I asked about the price of the HI 99151 and this was the response:

Unfortunately, I can’t really go any lower on the HI 99151 as the cost price plus freight and duties wont allow me to break even at $300.

Thirdly I forwarded this message from HoppinMad for a response:

"Just a word of warning regarding the 99151. I bought one of these a couple of years ago and after 18 months it stopped showing steady readings. I called hannah and they said that is an indication that the probe needed replacing. Unfortunately the probes are only guaranteed for 6 months and apparently it is generally recommended that they be replaced every two years anyway. A new probe for that model is worth about $240 from memory.... yes almost as much as the meter itself! Anyway, might be worth a call to Hannah to ask them for detailed info regarding that model. They are much more accurate yes... but they are also much more complex and require a higher level of maintenance."

This was the response in red:

Just a word of warning regarding the 99151. I bought one of these a couple of years ago This model was released in June 2013
and after 18 months it stopped showing steady readings pH electrodes life expectancy is 1-2 years.

I called hannah and they said that is an indication that the probe needed replacing Yes.

Unfortunately the probes are only guaranteed for 6 months and apparently it is generally recommended that they be replaced every two years anyway Yes.

A new probe for that model is worth about $240 from memory.... yes almost as much as the meter itself The electrode is the most important part of the pH meter, think of it like an engine for a car. The pH meter can only work if the electrode is good.!

Anyway, might be worth a call to Hannah to ask them for detailed info regarding that model This meter is relatively new (less than one year).

They are much more accurate yes... but they are also much more complex and require a higher level of maintenance. All pH electrodes and meters need to be maintained properly, just like your car with regular oil changes and servicing. It does not matter if you have a pen style tester or a ph meter with robust probe. Please see electrode instruction guide attached for the proper Maintenance for ALL pH electrodes, every model and every brand.

Sorry HoppinMad, please don't shoot the messenger

Last of all, Aydos was asking if he could add a thermometer to the bulk buy, he was looking at this one:

www.hannainst.com.au/learn_more/c:HI+98509

We can get this one for $40 + gst and (and postage).

If anyone wants one, put your name down but get in quick because I am hoping to make an order soon.

So the thermometer brings us to 20 units.
So long as no one decides to pull out due to the information above, we will be ready to place an order very soon.
I will be sending out a group PM to ask everyone to confirm that they are still in on this very soon.

Thanks guys
