Melbourne brewers!!!

I am wanting to get some of the 4PH, 7PH and storage solutions and am happy to split with 1 of 2 others; 2 others would make sense, as we can each buy 1 bottle to share.

Goonboy, are you still keen to do this? and does anyone else want to jump in, or expand this further?

Cheers

Baz

Ok guys

I have been on the phone with the rep today regarding a few things, trying to get this bulk buy wrapped up so that we can place an order.

Firstly I have a price for replacement probes which I am not very impressed with:

HI 99151 (1297D electrode) $304
HI 98128 (73127 electrode) $101
HI 98103 (1270 electrode) $43.50 (This one is irrelevant because no one is getting any of this meter)

All prices are excl. GST and freight.

Basically I asked her to explain why the replacement probes are more than the cost of the meter itself.
Her answer was that the price that we are getting the meters for is much cheaper because we are buying 20 of them.

Secondly I asked about the price of the HI 99151 and this was the response:

Unfortunately, I can’t really go any lower on the HI 99151 as the cost price plus freight and duties wont allow me to break even at $300.

Thirdly I forwarded this message from HoppinMad for a response:

"Just a word of warning regarding the 99151. I bought one of these a couple of years ago and after 18 months it stopped showing steady readings. I called hannah and they said that is an indication that the probe needed replacing. Unfortunately the probes are only guaranteed for 6 months and apparently it is generally recommended that they be replaced every two years anyway. A new probe for that model is worth about $240 from memory.... yes almost as much as the meter itself! Anyway, might be worth a call to Hannah to ask them for detailed info regarding that model. They are much more accurate yes... but they are also much more complex and require a higher level of maintenance."

This was the response in red:

Just a word of warning regarding the 99151. I bought one of these a couple of years ago This model was released in June 2013
and after 18 months it stopped showing steady readings pH electrodes life expectancy is 1-2 years.

I called hannah and they said that is an indication that the probe needed replacing Yes.

Unfortunately the probes are only guaranteed for 6 months and apparently it is generally recommended that they be replaced every two years anyway Yes.

A new probe for that model is worth about $240 from memory.... yes almost as much as the meter itself The electrode is the most important part of the pH meter, think of it like an engine for a car. The pH meter can only work if the electrode is good.!

Anyway, might be worth a call to Hannah to ask them for detailed info regarding that model This meter is relatively new (less than one year).

They are much more accurate yes... but they are also much more complex and require a higher level of maintenance. All pH electrodes and meters need to be maintained properly, just like your car with regular oil changes and servicing. It does not matter if you have a pen style tester or a ph meter with robust probe. Please see electrode instruction guide attached for the proper Maintenance for ALL pH electrodes, every model and every brand.

Sorry HoppinMad, please don't shoot the messenger

Last of all, Aydos was asking if he could add a thermometer to the bulk buy, he was looking at this one:

www.hannainst.com.au/learn_more/c:HI+98509

We can get this one for $40 + gst and (and postage).

If anyone wants one, put your name down but get in quick because I am hoping to make an order soon.

So the thermometer brings us to 20 units.
So long as no one decides to pull out due to the information above, we will be ready to place an order very soon.
I will be sending out a group PM to ask everyone to confirm that they are still in on this very soon.

Thanks guys
The pH meter I bought looked almost identical and was called a pH meter for the beer industry. Resistant to temps over 100C.... etc. The probe also looks identical.... just with a higher price tag than I remember. Must have been the previous model of the same meter. Either way, facts are the same.

The bottom line is that if you buy one of the 99151 pH meters you need to understand that you will be forking out $300 every two years for a new probe... minimum. In my opinion (and from my experience) a home brewer's money would be better spent elsewhere when attempting to improve the quality of their beer... examples include accurate thermometers, fermentation controllers, yeast propagation equipment, good quality fresh ingredients, etc.

My 2c anyway

Well said HoppinMad
I'm even considering dropping back to the mid range meter myself.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us too as I would never have thought to check the price of replacement electrodes.
That being said, in 2 years time we could probably organise a bulk buy of replacement probes.

No I am not in the bulk buy as I already have a pH meter, just want the solutions. So probably best if you buy and I'll fix you up.

Will need to get back to you on my 3. As I'm buying on behalf of a couple of guys in my brew club, I need to run this past them first. I really hope this doesn't end up sinking the whole bulk buy, but I think they need to be made away of the ongoing replacement costs.

If it was just me, I'd say "No worries", even though I only brew about once a month (replacement of the probe every 12-18 months effectively adds an additional $5 - $10 to every brew)

No problem smallfry, yummybeer added another one to the order anyway so that brings the total to 21.
If you need to pull out, no hard feelings.

Hi Baz/Black n Tan,

I'm keen to split the 4ph, 7ph and storage but am located bayside os may be hard to coordinate. Any other bayside brewers club members on the bulk but and want to split solutions?

BABBS members have all confirmed their orders.

Welcome to the bulk buy Womball!
PM me your email address and I will put you in touch with the other BABBS members who are keen to split solutions.

We are still waiting for three people to confirm their orders.

Peas and corn

Smallfry

and Wolfman

I know that you were thinking about pulling out Smallfry, at this stage two people could pull out and this won't affect us.
If any of you guys are thinking of moving out, just let us know so that we can move on.

I'm going to be working on the spreadsheet soon so we need to finalize solutions.
Are you guys in melbourne getting close to an outcome yet?
