Chappo isn't real. He's a welcome bot I programmed in LISP early last year

That's only partially untrue. He is real, but he does have a lisp.

Welcome to all the recent new members. AHB is an excellent place to help build your brewing experience. No question is too stupid, and there's plenty of others happy to help.

As long as you don't as about your bloody airlock activity :icon_cheers:

Welcome all new guys, I've just made the connection, Wez you are the Monkey guy :icon_cheers: . Vossy your Avatar is great but your signature is lacking. It should read "Feck, Arse, Drink, women's knickers " Also brilliant to get some more USA guys on the forum. In Australia we are totally in love with your hops such as Cascade, Chinook etc and there is a big APA and AAA adoption in Australia at the moment. About to bottle an amber tomorrow.

Happy brewing :icon_cheers:

PS Chappo is a great guy when we allow him out of his kennel.

As long as you are the one to hold him down when we give him a good Aussie Mulesing, then I'm down with letting him out more.

Is that a touch of fly strike I see? :p

P.S. Chappos Tops

see got out of that one rather quickly ;)

I really hope Chappo hangs around. Welcome to you as well Chappo. There was this guy trevc who joined in May 08. Got straight into AG, growing his own hops, (all whilst on the millionth floor of a unit block on the Gold Coast) learnt heaps, gave good advice, >500 posts etc etc.
Then March 09 out of the blue "see you guys, brewing's not for me - I'm going sailing" AND sold all his fantastic gear.
I was sorry to see him go. Black arm bands for another HBer lost...

Now I'm not knocking trevc at all - its his life after all.

Chappo - if you go soon, dibs on the Sherman

Nah, mate, you look like a stayer. Keep up the good work!
Regards, mckenry.

Hopefully I can keep TrevC's legacy alive by using his well cared for gear to pump out some really tasty AG brews. As much as it is frustrating in some ways I can understand Trev's reasoning and I wish him well on his future endeavours. And Trev, if you are reading this, your bottles will be on the way in the coming weeks...

Hi all,

I just signed up this week after my wife got me a kegerator for my 30th (which isn't til august). I have a wort kit hefeweizen brewing now ,bubbling away, can't wait to keg it and try out my first brew. I've yet to do a label yet but I think I'll call it the "Kirschepopper Hefeweizen" which according to babelfish means "cherry popper" :)

I'm out at Springwood QLD, I'm keen on german\european and craft beers, especially hefeweizens and ales. Last year I did a quick trip through germany and tried many a fine beer, especially in Bamberg where we were there during their Sandkerwa festival of beer and wine also where I got to try their famous Rauchbier right off the tap. mmm bacon

I was introduce to this forum and helped with my first brew by forum member Billbo who I work with.

Welcome to the forum wetwired. You lucky bugger living at Springwood - also very handy to a lot of other southside brewers, handy for the Brisbane Amateur Beer Brewers BABBs - Meetings fourth Thursday of each month. Not to mention being just down the road from Chappo :D

If it wasn't for this forum I would still be cranking out rotgut 10% ginger beer and Coopers kits. Apart from fresh wort kits, what other brewing are you getting into?

Cheers
BribieG

Well I'm just getting set up for now, with the kegerator, 1 keg, fermenter and other bits and pieces. I have an old bar fridge now so in the future I'm looking at getting a temperature regulator and use it for fermenting in (currently I have my fermenter outside under the patio sitting in a big bucket of water around 19-22c)

So once I get the temp regulator and another keg I might do an amber or golden ale. I'll probably stick with wort kits for a while, get the hang of things and seeing how I go. If all goes we'll later in the year (closer to xmas and after our baby is born) I'll look at getting a kettle and gear to start doing my own all grain beers from scratch.

But for now I'm just taking things in steps, start out slowly and work my way up.

And yeah I got all the setup gear (apart from the kegerator and keg) from craftbrewer, nice and handy

Hello all,

My name is Rowan and I'm returning to all-grain brewing after a break of around 4.5 years. During that time time I'd not followed a discussion list or browsed a retail site and its amazing to see the changes over that time. Equipment that previously only seemed available from stores like morebeer in the US is now routinely available locally. One of the biggest breakthroughs must surely be the ability to purchase & refill CO2 bottles from the local hbs. Fair dinkum that's a hell of a leap forward. Its also great to see that ESB at Peakhurst & Grain and Grape in Victoria are still around and thriving.

At this stage I'm in the process of getting some gear together. I have a Valley Mill, a refractometer, a couple of postmix kegs, counterflow chiller & a converted rubbermaid cooler/mashtun from when I last brewed. I just purchased a temp mate (courtesy of Craftbrewer.com) and I reckon the next item will be a fermentation freezer or fridge (& at this stage I'm veering toward something like a 220 litre chest freezer - something suitable for a couple of half-sized fermenters).

I've been really interested to read about no-chill and biab and I'll certainly give them a go.

Anyway - great to see that Aussiehomebrewer is thriving and I look forward to following the forums.

bye

And a big welcome to the new members. Happy reading. There is a wealth of information in there them threads.
A little handy tool I found for searching for info on the forum was this which is an AHB search plugin for IE7 and Firefox.

Hey all fellow brewers,

My name is Liam and i reside in Leederville, WA. I more or less drank myself into home brewing, ie was pissed when a friend was clearing out his shed and offered me his old (extra malt) fermenter.
I have just bottled my first mexican cerveza and looking forward to trying it out? I have just ordered all my kegging equipment so may be asking various questions on how to get started or even ask to be shown if any local Perth brewer is ready to keg?
Anyways hope to share a beer with some of the WA crew and will keep you up to date with my developments.

Cheers,

Liam

Hey Liam:

"Ya mama got a glass eye with the fish in it!"

Good luck with the brewing, and remember ferment temp is super critical to drinkable beer.

Hey everybody.

Just signed up. I am still in a debate whether I should now buy a distiller any advice? Could spice up the beers some. I am a pretty big newbie on this brewing topic. I hail from around the Brisbane area. I have just finished putting together my first brew. Hope it turns out just good enough to not put me off home brewing. It was simply a cooper ale kit bough from good old coles. I saw home brand brew kit there too, thought better of it. (Anyone know what that tastes like?) SO yeah I hope to get I load of advice and ideas from here to achieve the perfect home brew.

Cheers

Welcome, Achmann.

Distillation is a big no-no on this site as it's illegal to distill alcohol in Australia without a permit. You've come to the right place if you want to learn about beer though. My advice is to learn to use the search, as there's so much info on here it'll blow you away. (Add a '+' to every search term, and don't use words of 3 letters or less, and the search will be your friend). Your first steps towards beer nirvana are replacing the kit yeast, fermentation temperature control (especially here in South East Queensland), and replacing the sugar with dried malt extract. Those steps alone will improve your beer immensely. Where you take it from there is up to you.

Enjoy your beer and keep on brewing.

Hello All!

My name's Lee, I've already done some posts in other topics but just found this and thought I'd say G'day. It's great to see so many people interested in good beer! My love affair began when I got fed-up with XXXX (why Queensland, why?!?!) and took a "gamble" and tried Tooheys Old. It was all down-hill from there...At the moment, I'm right into dark ales (Old Engine Oil, Dogbolter, Grand Ridge Black & Tan etc), English-style bitters (Barons do a cracking ESB), and mostly just ales in general, but I have started venturing into lagers and pilseners recently.

I'd been considering home-brewing for a while and whilst on my honeymoon in January, my wife & I did a brewery tour at Speights in NZ which sealed the deal for me. When we got back, my Sister asked what we'd want for a wedding present & my lovely wife suggested a home brew set-up :D
So I'm pretty new to the world of home-brew, just put my 3rd in the fermenter Friday night- a robust porter using a kit and some steeped-grains. I've also done an apple cider (going to sample the first of it tonight!) and started off with the munich lager kit which came with the starter pack.

So thats me in a nut-shell! Look forward to meeting lots of you and learning heaps. Cheers!

Welcome Lee, to the world of hops and unholy obsessions with stainless steel. Steeping grains already, good stuff!

I see you're in Brisbane. You may be interested in coming along to BABBs (Brisbane Amateur Beer Brewers) meetings. There are quite a few of us AHBers there (I won't be at the next meeting due to the imminent arrival of apprentice brewer number 2). Check out http://www.babbrewers.com/ if you're interested in meeting fellow brewers and talking about brewing while sampling some fantastic beers.

Hey all!

The names Jared and I'm just starting out in this wonderful world of brewing (from a can for now) I'm only 19 so naivety is my excuse for now ha. so far the collection is 23 litres Stout, 46 litres real ale and 69 litres of sternhoff lager over 2 and a half months.... I LOVE MY LIFE!!!!!! only problem so far is running out before the next lot is ready.

Im From N.Z but dont hold that against me, and i just got sick of the commercial beer we have here so my parents and grandparents 'showed me the way'

Any way i really cant wait to meet you all as you seem like my kinda people!
See ya round!
Cheers, J-Nizzle

G'day all,
I'm a new member also, and am giving this blogging thing a crack. I've been homebrewing for around 6 years and have started putting together my own dodgy brewery setup thing. I've finished converting an old esky into a mash tun (i'm a little concerned about heat retention, any ideas?) and am investigating the construction of a heat exchange. Anyways the last brew i put together was an american ale style flavoured lager and will today put down another lager with the nelson sauvin and amarillo/cascade hops. I've tried the sauvin a few times and i'm a bit of a fan. I tried it in the knappstein breweries reserve lager and the schwartz breweries new pilsner, any suggestions on other craft breweries who are using it?

As you may have guessed i love trying new beers and having a crack at home. Anyways a great site here and i look forward to posts and posting.

Cheers

Hey Lee, the BABBs meeting this month (Thurs 28 May) features a mini-competition where you get to sample a range of other members' beers on the evening and get to mark them against the guidelines, and guess what this month's competition is dark ales. You'll be in dark ale heaven, just turn up and introduce yourself to Ross and Paul at the desk and bring your six bucks meeting fee and you'll find a few of us AHB - ers there as well. No need to bring any samples at this stage.
Cheers

Hi Sim, welcome aboard... sounds like you are a veteran already. ;) It's amazing how many people out there are doing all grain brewing but have never been on a forum or in a club. It's like coming in from the cold to a cosy campfire meeting.

Cheers
Michael
