Just cleaned my flask and thought why not throw the stir bar in aswell to clean both at once.
All was going good until i tipped the water and the stir bar down the sink :(

So how many of you have done the same?

Guilty of dumping into fermenter..but i get a magnet and place on the outside and hopefully find it..

If its down the sink, take the U bend off your sink and fish it out ( bucket under it as you remove it as there will be liquid in the U)

I have had to fish ear rings and the likes out before, luckly never a stir bar. Wash it well :)

Same here. I now use a magnet to get the stir bar from the starter before I pitch into the fermenter.

Have lost one down the sink. When I get home I'm gonna try fishing it out of the U bend with a magnet.

Usually I just soak my flask in sodium perc with the stir bar in it. Then attach a magnet to the wall of the flask when rinsing.

Thanks for the reminder :D, I pitched my stirbar in my last brew and I had completely forgotten.

Pitched it into the fermenter quite a few times. The trick is to remember it's in there before you dump the yeast cake into the bushes. As I did once

Every time I pitch my stir bar I put a big piece of masking tape over the glad wrap of my fermenter, and write with a Nikko "stir Bar inside" on it.
Has saved my stir bar so far, have never tipped it out into the drain.

i have lost one stirbar down the drain, but emptied into my wort when piching quite a few times. i have a big arse magnet now so it dont budge when pitching anymore.

Into the fermenter many times. Yeah the magnet on the outside helps a treat.

Have tipped mine into my fermenter many many times but on purpose. Yousee I have 8 of them!!

The reason I have 8 is because the website I got them from (PROSCITECH) doesnt really make it clear that when you pay $7 you are buying a packet of 4. I wanted to have 2 spares so I ordered what I thought was 2 (or $14 worth) when 8 arrived the penny dropped!!

So after all that if I happen to drop one down the drain I wont really be fussed! :)

Using a second stir bar to hold it against the base of the flask when pitching starter from flask to fermentor works a treat for me.

Otherwise trub dumped out onto the lawn then fish it out of the trub!

I always crash chill my starters for 24hrs minimum prior to pitching. So when I decant the oxidized beer on top i'mmleft with only a 100ml or so in the flask or bottle, which is usually very compacted. I just chuck it back on the stirplate for 10mins or so to resuspend the yeast and let it warm up to pitching temp. Makes it easier to pitch. Hard to forget about the stir bar this way. Just get another magnet and stick it on the bottom of the flask, stay nice and secure. Thankfully never lost or pitched one yet. Dead cert I'll lose one now.

I'm such a dill sometimes, I'm pretty sure I've had a stir-bar in the fermenter about half the time if I use a starter. I just seem to forget its there, swirl it up and dump the lot in. I keep extras now, so I'm not without my stir plate waiting for the beer to finish so I can strain it out of the trub.

I haven't lost one down the sink (they are usually in the fermenter!)

I like the idea of using a magnet to keep the bar in place, saves having to sanitize a straining spoon like I have been.

I just carefully pour the starter off and the bar stays behind :-/

The biggest trick is when I actually want to transfer the bar from my 2L to 5L during stepping

Mind you, the very first time I pitched a starter the stir bar went in :)

And I imagine it will happen again

Do you use an erlenmeyer flask though, I reckon it would be pretty damned hard not to tip it in with a flask.

I'm surprised that I've managed to remember so far, its not like me to remember things....

I normally just hold the stir plate while tipping the flask, thankfully it weighs nothing.

I've still got all my stirbars thanks to Jaycar & these little fellas. Best $5 I ever spent.
I've never done it but I've heard of them being used as a stirbar in tandem with rare earth magnets on the stirplate fan. Rossco might remember?
