whats every ones thought on using a hop sock vs not using one .. just trying to work out the best method for dry hopping ... i havnt been getting a lot of hoppy notes coming thru in my last dry hopped beers :chug:

Do you keg? Keg hopping works.

How much were you dry hopping/ what hop? Up the dry hop rate? Were they well stored or fresh hops?

I sometimes still use my hopsock, I will generally add slightly more when using it ~5% more hops to allow for the less utilisation.

Mostly though they go in au naturel because I leave most behind at whirlpool, and after cold crashing the remainder drop out.

Also worth noting that "hoppiness" in the beer will be at it's peak fresh.

Hop sock always only about 30-40 grams in each use more socks if needed

Try it each way, you'll soon work it out for your own personal taste. I don't use them except for keg hopping.

yeah i keg can you dry hop as well as keg hop ?
i usually dry hop arounf the 1.5g per liter mark usually with simcoe amarillo or cascade what ever i have on hand

Yeah you can, I dry hop while crash chilling, and then if I'm chasing that bit more will keg hop as well. 1.5g/L is pretty in the middle of the road for dry hopping, you should be getting a bit but could still up it.

I only dry hop for ~ 3 or 4 days while crash chilling, and then keg hopping I only leave for 2-5 days... Taste testing is always the decider of when to pull the keg hops.

If fermentation is still occurring during dry hopping it can also strip some of the flavour/aroma.

Flowers and plugs- yes, definitely. Pack 'em loose.
Pellets - don't worry.

Definitely this.

I dry hopped with plugs once without a hop sock/bag and spent 3 hours when bottling constantly unblocking my tap and wand. Was a real PITA and put me off plugs for ages.

ahh that interesting always been told to dry hop bout day 5 so you get 2 days ish with the ferment still active ... is this right or do you think just do it once its finished so no flavour gets stripped ?
