My understanding is that slants will keep longer but I have used months old water kept yeast with no issues.

I have also used months old water kept yeast in beer that has had issues - whether those issues came from the yeast or some other variable is hard to say. I'll probably head towards agar but one move at a time is how I progress. At the moment it's from longneck to testube.
 
I'm with you Manticle, one step at a time.

I have some 1272 that has been stored under boiled water from a wyeast split that is around 12 months old now. There are some dark patches but it still steps up fine (although a bit slower to start) and as good as ever. It's probably about time to make some gen one samples just to keep a viable stock. Just waiting for my test tubes to arrive, it will be good to have them organized and in a rack.
