In the system i'm making I want to recirculate during the boil to sanitise then afterwards to whirlpool. Will I need a filter on the pickup tube to stop hops etc getting sucked through the pump? Or even a false bottom in the kettle?

Yes you will, or utilise a hopsock for hop additions.

I have a crude one made from fine termimesh that is folded around the end of my copper pickup tube.

The termimesh does tend to start to clog up slightly due to the hop debris and break, as it continually draws from the kettle.
