Hi,

I'm wondering if any chemists out there could give me a hand.

In Palmers "How To Brew" he recommends the cleaners "Straight A" and "Powder Brewery Wash".

He also states that they contain sodium metasilicate and sodium percarbonate.

I've got myself some pure sodium percarbonate and my local home brew store sells sodium metasilicate as "Brewers Detergent".

I'm guessing that I would only use a small amount of sodium metasilicate (compared to sodium percarbonate) to act as a surfactant, but I'm no expert.

So cutting to the chase:
Does anyone have any ideas on the amount of sodium percarbonate and sodium metasilicate I should add to each litre of water?

Cheers!!!!

Is it poor form to answer your own question?

I found this on the Northern Brewer forum:

From reading the patent it seems that PBW contains (or at least the patent is for a cleaner with)

Sodium metasilicate: 10-30%
sodium percarbonate: 25 - 40%
polyalkylphosphonic acid (chelate): 3 - 8%
Surfactant: 2 - 6%
sodium carbonate (builder): balance

And from the Five Star web site the rate of use is 1-3 ounces/gallon

Usually it is poor form to have a run of multiple posts in the same thread. But your answer was made after good googling and contains excellent information and all is forgiven.

If possible, could you also include the link where you found the answer as well as the cut and paste of information. That way, if someone wants to follow up, they can.

My references for the above information.

PBW patent content, second post from bottom:

The rate of usage reference:

Also have found from the PRW MSDS that the actual amount of Sodium metasilicate is 30%

Excellent info, but now there will be more things on the shopping list for Roger Mellie for the Perth sodium percarbonate bulk buy!!!!!!!!

thats way too techo for me.......

Sodium Percarbonate, neat, at about 1 teaspoon to the litre cleans my gear just fine...no need for the other stuff......

then a spray of orthophosphoric acid(3 drops to the litre in a spray bottle) to do the sanitise just before Im going to fill the fermenter

may be too simple for some though
