Cost Of Making An Extract Brew ?

Hi All

Just wonder what would be the average price to put together an extract brew ?

A couple of tins of malt , Hops and Yeast .

Not sure im being looked after to well at the LHBS .

I think the Hops is the area that was expensive . just curious .

Hops are not that expensive about $6.50/$7 40g,compared to about $12-$15 for a tin of malt,yeast about $4.50-$8 ....also depends where you get your supply's from on the prices

Most hops are under $10 from sponsors for 90g - and can be bought for as little as $20 for 450g from overseas if you get into a bulk buy to split the postage. Depends how far you want to go with the hobby. Similarly, drums of malt extract and sacks of light dried malt extract can be bought far more cheaply than individual tins. Americans can get Briess LDME for around $5 a kilo, perhaps similar here with our variety?

If I hadn't gone full mash brewing I would probably have gone dried malt extract in 20k sacks or however it comes, hops in bulk and reculture yeasts for a few generations and would probably be looking at around $20 for a full bodied ale.

Edit: Tropical Brews and Shed 101 would probably have some reliable figures.

That was about what I was expecting . $40 .

The problem lay with the hops as i mentioned 25g packets @ $6.95 each

i bulk bought so ldme $5.50 a kg. Dex was about $2.50 a kg. Hops think i paid $9 for 500g but that was a rare deal lhbs offered. Yeast $5. Then gas water and electricity maybe $4

Yes I have been looking at the sponsers sites and there is a great deal of difference .

Like to support the LHBS but I dont wont to buy the damm thing.

Might have to place an order and see how the system works .

I actually buy all my hops from CB and most of my malt extract by the kilo too. My LHBS is $11.00 for a kilo of dme.

I have also bought stuff from G&G but it is a long way from here not that it really matters just a few days by post.

Never had any problems so far hops and dried yeasts come vacuum packed from Craftbrewer usually 2 or 3 days after order is placed.
I just stick them in fridge or freezer when they arrive.

I am a K&B brewer but I only ever buy specialist kits (Thomas Coopers) or LME from my LHBS.

All my hops, DME, spec grains, yeast etc come from Craftbrewer who are always prompt on delivery. If you plan a few brews at a time the postage works out to be insignificant.

To put it in perspective, my most expensive brew yet has been a Belgian Dubbel that used Belgian candii syrup, specialty malt, a liquid yeast (all from CB) and a tin of TC Pilsener (from LHBS) all upto 13L. Worked out equivalent of $40 a standard case (ie. 24 x 375mL stubbies).

Standardish brew for me:

2 tins Coopers liquid extract $24
400g of spec. grains $2.50
50g hops $5
Yeast $4.25
maybe 500g dry malt extract $4

a good partial costs me about $40 -$45 for 23l.....extract, hops, grains, yeast, caps, priming sugar, cleaning supplies, water...the whole shebang....

are you sure you didnt buy a share of the HBS, maybe you should confirm next time you go there( if you go there again ) <_<

My extract brews were my most expensive brews at $35-40 a pop. If i couldn't ag i think i'd just get those fresh wort kits, similar price and so much easier!

If you're paying $75 a brew you may as well get some of those fresh wort kits.

I only ever did a few partials or extract brews before I moved on. They would have cost me $40-$50 each easy. Bulk buys for grain and hops, and re-using yeastcake have dramatically reduced this. now $20 tops for 20 ltrs. Even ordering from a sponsor eg should reduce it. Extract is quicker, if you can make it cheaper and you enjoy the results then you are on a winner.

that makes 50L extract APA about $65[$1.30/l] for me instead of around $80[$1.60/l].

not much to be saved on the pre-hopped stuff though.

I recommend moving straight to stovetop BIAB. You could setup for $50. Get a coffee grinder. Buy bags of grain in bulk buys $2-3 per kilo. Hops from the US cheap.
Cheapest, best, done.
