Folks

I put the lid on one of my kegs today and when I latched it down, one of the plastic end thingies on the latch disintegrated. The lid seals just fine without the plastic bit but when you latch or unlatch its metal on metal which makes a horrible noise and leaves a nasty scratch on the lid of the keg which I imagine will deepen over time and eventually wear through.

Does anyone know whether you can get replacements for the plastic bits? Or whether there is any substitute you can use? I could go to one of the sponsors and get a new lid but that seems like a waste as all I really need is a little plastic thingy.

Cheers

Keg boot? Sponsors. They may not have them on their website, but I'm sure both Craftbrewer and G&G would sell them to you.

If by some chance they won't, morebeer in the US sell them ("Keg Lid Foot").

edit : TWOC in WA definitely sell them online too:

edit again: Grain and grape have them on their website too actually, as part "Bail foot cover".

Your local HBS should be able to get them in for you.

Can't help you Airgead but this is a question I have often pondered on. Life being what it is I would say that we would have to grit our teeth & pay out for a new (Used lid).
Very happy to be proved wrong. :icon_cheers:

I'd just wrap in a bunch of electrical or duct tape and see how that fairs before forking out for a new lid.

You can get them here http://morebeer.com/view_product/18210/102295/Keg_Lid__Foot - not worth the shipping (~30 by the calculator) to just get one of them, but you could throw it into a bigger order if there was anything else you wanted.

Dave,
I got my last replacement from Pat at Absolute Homebrew....where the kegs came from.
I got the impression from Pat is was a common spare part.

Asquith Homebrew are closer to you & stock kegging gear & spares....worth a try.

I would not use keg w/out it.

Thanks folks. I have a bunch of leads now. My keg should be back up and running very shortly (just in time to hold the heffe I brewed yesterday).

Cheers

Edit: Holy crap. That was my 1000th post! And brewing related too. Its only taken me 5 years...

Cut the end off the cap of a 'kilometrico' pen and use that, looks about the right size and would stop the horrible squeaking.

Bribie

For a few brief seconds you were an absolute genius.

Then the pen lid cracked under the strain...

Have never tried this but if you can find a piece of clear tubing to fit firmly over the end of the latch to make the diameter bigger you might be able to push a 3\8" chair leg protector over that? Worth a try anyway.

Mark at Asquith has bits and pieces for kegs as he is thouroughly reconditioning corny's all the time. In the past he has given me second hand releif valves when I was tracking down a leak.

Not a bad idea but given that an actual keg latch end cover thingy will set me back about $2 from our sponsors and I need to order some hops in the next few days anyway... I think a 3/8 chair leg protector and tubing will end up costing me more.

Edit - OzBeer - I'll pop into Asquith and see if he has anything on hand. I walk past there every day on my way to and from the station but never think to go in...
