hi all
going to Vanuatu next week, are there any nice local beers to try?

Any advice on where to find a decent beer, any special tourist thing to do etc will also be appreciated.
(by me, my prettier half may not agree to the pub part ;) )

thanks
Bjorn

you must see the cascades, other than that its mostly ether nz or australian megaswill.

I went to Port Villa last month...Only there the day ...It Rained.
Didn't see much...
The last Duty Free at end of shops is the cheapest..
We went on the Pacific Jewel for a cruise...
If you are on a boat buying liquor etc. ashore is cheaper..
Cheers

thanks guys.
We're just flying there for a week, planning to go to a couple of touristy things.
other than that just take it easy.
Was hoping there was a nice expat pub or something and wanted to find it early rather than on the last day

Me and the missus went there for our honeymoon 6 years ago and the local beer is called Tusker and you can get it any where nothing flash but when you pay for an all inclusive holiday that's what you drink.there was also a stronger version in some of the shops, didn't taste that one. Can't remember about the bar but if you are after something different get a taxi to one of the karva bars and have some of that stuff. Anyway have fun.

Recently my Sister brought me back some of the local eurolager knockoff (Tusker Lager, here's the full list on ratebeer), really nothing to get excited about I'm afraid, but there's also a stronger OP version which is the one I'd head for given the choice. Unless things there in the brewery have changed dramatically, I wouldn't get your hopes up... :(

I'm shortly going to Ulan Bator and then onto the Steppes to join with the local nomads and experience their ancestral millenia-old lifestyle and rejoice in the fact that I am not in fucken Queensland.

However could you please advise me of any Good Bunnings Warehouse substitutes they have there?

Others have mentioned Tusker which you'll find everywhere (and there could be worse things to have drink to in the hot and sticky weather..), but there's also a smaller brewpub-like establishment (or maybe even two but one wasn't doing so well last I heard) in Vila, might be worth seeking out for a change.

Any advice on where to find a decent beer, any special tourist thing to do etc will also be appreciated.

I would have to recommend Moorings (because my sister & her husband &c run the place, it's my duty :p) for a beer/cocktail/whatever. You were asking about expat hangouts, IIRC the Anchor is often full of them (but I'm not sure why you'd want to?!).

As for touristy stuff, you should go and check out the volcano. Looks awesome. No shortage of other (cheaper) stuff to do (kayaking, walking, diving etc), your hotel should be able to sort you out once you get there though.

Enjoy! (ha det roligt?)

We went to Vanuatu for our honeymoon.

See Tanna and the volcano

I didn't mind Tusker, I think there was a Gold/premium version too

Hey Bjorn IMO the Vanuatu Lager/Draught is a nicer drop than the Tusker, but in the humidity they both go down all right.

If you get the chance a day on the Buggy tour is cool and a day cruise on the Congoola is relax city.

Either way get yourself some of the Tusker brasserie style glasses, best glasses I have ever had.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback guys.

Still at work at 7.30, one day to go then it's time for holidays :D

I might be heading there in January for a week or so - and a quick google turned up this place:

Nambawan brewery Bar:
http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Re...Vila_Efate.html

"The range of beers presently consists of the Draught, Bitter, Gold, Porter and a Reserve blend that will be offered for sale from time to time on a limited basis as well as a special brew called, Henry Peeters’ Signature."

lol, one review on tripadvisor: "My husband sampled a few, but I stuck to their Pale Ale which was delicious and which I nicknamed "mango beer" as it had a sweet taste-YUM!"

Has anyone here checked it out?

Cant say I tried said Nambawan Brewery Bar whilst there but do yourself a favour and have at least one dinner at Chill,

upstairs at the back of the supermarket next to the international markets.

Get yourself to one of the cava huts...ask a local 'taxi' for a good one....its different and the locals are bloody super friendly.

At the brewery bar now - wifi (telsat) is slow and that's if it works. 3rd time I've been here this week - only beers they have on tap are draught, bitter, gold, & porter.
They're all clean tasting (unlike tusker which tastes like rusty barnacle-arse). Draught & bitter are very similar but the bitter is bit maltier. No hops really. Closest comparison might be a fresh xxxx bitter. The porter isn't. It's pretty much the same as the bitter but with just enough colour to be called a porter. No roast or choc flavour really.
The food here is decent - the 1000VT pizza on mon/tues is a must!

Going to chill tonight, look good yesterday when I checked it out.

Waterfront did a great beef curry.

The cascades were cool.

If you go to hideaway island for a snorkel, the wifi password is guest123.

There's a French restaurant "chantilly's on the bay" in Port Vila north of the dock area. The beef is amazingly soft.

Get to the Casino and play $2.50 AUD blackjack & drink free. Its a cheap night out.
I walked in with $20 AUD & walked out pissed with $40!!

+1 for the cascades. Also try and get yourself on a cruise on one of the sailing boats there too. Good diving/snorkelling as well.

I just drank the local brew, which was a non-descript lager, but goes down easy in the heat.

Checked out that wild horse saloon bar (or whatever its called) yesterday, it's full on tacky American memorabilia - the food was American diner style as expected - the beers were more flavoursome than nambawan but in an "I used stale hops and random additions" kind of way. the porter was pretty decent, much better than nambawan's attempt.
