Last night while making a starter as i was adding my yeast nutrient i pondered the question, can the yeast overdose on this stuff? Kind of like a plant can overdose on fertilizer?
So instead of adding my usual dozen or so tiny crystals to a 1lt starter i added roughly a 1/4tsp and it seems to be kicking along nicely. But has anyone had any negative outcomes with using too much nutrient?

Too much of a good thing is toxic to yeast.

For example, we all know that zinc is very important to yeast (and to us) but too much is toxic.

So make sure that you are adding the right amount, follow the manufacturers instructions for doseage, and scale back accordingly when doing small amounts for starters.

Too much nutrient can lead to a noticable taste int he finished product. Espercially in something relatively neutral like a mead. The first time I used it I neglected to read the instructions on the nutrient packet and chicked the whole thing (20g or so) into a 5l batch of light mead. Urgh. Fermentation was lousy too so the yeast weren't that keen on the taste either.

Cheers

Apparently yeast can get too much nutrient. I was just wondering what was "too much" nutrient for those of us who use the quasi-nutrient - "boiled can yeast"?
How many packs of can yeast can go in the boil before you over do things?

Never used it so I cant say.
I just use good old barley malt, I believe it has all the goodness brewers yeast needs to grow heathy.
