I've been harvesting yeast from the bottom of previous brews for a while now and something I never thought about until a few days ago is, if a brew is cleared with gelatine will the yeast collected from it be less effective?
Also, I generally wash my yeast with water that has been pre-boiled and cooled to separate hop trub etc. Is this likely to remove gelatine?

Basically, am I wasting my time harvesting yeast that has been gelatined?

Does anyone else use gelatine AND harvest?
Any advice?

Cheers!
Jono.

My thoughts are that you are not wasting your time as such, Gelatine will help clump the yeast together making it heavier so it will fall out of solution. Collecting yeast at the bottom of the container will still contain active yeast, so go for it I say.
