When Do You Rack To Secondary & Add Gelatine?

I have just finished the "Google" search function to trawl and read previous posts on this subject but it has still left me with a couple of questions

I've just started AG brewing and are looking to gelatine my beer for the first time, as the first one I did (no chill) was a little cloudier than my kit beers and are wondering on some opinions on when to do it.

Previously I'd primary ferment for 7 days @ 18deg
Then rack and secondary ferment/condition for 7 days @ 20deg
Then bottle

Should I just add the gelatine after the 7 days still or should I add it earlier???

Will I need to leave it in the secondary for so long before bottling?

Gday Finners,

I'd just add it when you rack to the secondary, so long as you're happy that you fermentation has completed ie stable hydrometer readings.

Wait a week, and bottle. If you can chill it as well it will help to drop more sediment out too.

If you are confident it has reached FG rhen rack and leave it for 3-5 days then add gelatine and let it settle out for 24 hours min.

A tip though which helps - if you can wack it in the fridge at the end of secondary and get it down to near 0 deg before adding gelatine and the leave it in the fridge for the 24 hours it tends to work better.

Or better still Cold condition the brew for a week or two in the fridge then add the gelatine at the end of that period.

Always allow beer to return to room temp prior to bottling.

Are you using whirlfloc 15min before the end of the boil? I do and find the whole finning process unnecessary now.

Sorry for thread hijack - that's what I normally do but experienced brewers on this forum told me it was unnecessary.

Why would you do this and why wouldn't you do this?

G'day manticle,

As I understand it and someone else will probably explain it better than me, but alot of residual Co2 remains trapped within beer at cold temps which can result in overcarbonation in bottled beer, as the beer warms up alot of the Co2 is released.

I rarely if ever rack to secondary anymore and never bother with gelatine so I would say "never" to both. I would also view worrying about raising the beer to room temp before transferring to kegs or bottles as being a little pedantic.
