I'm currently held up on the cost and the necessary leap of faith to spend heaps on equipment. Mill, NASA burner, kettle, wort cooler, march pump, spare d$ck (wouldn't get as silly as us playing with just one  ) (mash tun won't be a problem). Plenty of space but we're only on a six month lease here with the probability of a three year lease coming up after Xmas. If that eventuates then NASA here I come .. "This is Houston, this is Houston.. :p "

I won't go for the HBS for grain I'll just get sacks in. As I live in greater Brisbane does Ross do a sack pick-up deal anyone know?

I think the idea of this thread was to get responses from K&K'ers why they haven't converted.

$250 and a martyr complex inherited from my mother.

In short, I'll keep doing extracts with steeped grains as I can't afford the intial start-up costs, sounds like extra time spent on AG too, I'm happy with my beers and see no reason to spend more time on them!

after just spending $1100 on a kegging setup (kegerator, font, two kegs, MKOL gas bottle), I really can't justify going anywhere near doing even partial mashes just yet.

our kitchen fridge wobbles, is chocked up on one side with a piece of wood but my beer fridge is an absolute brand new cracker of a unit!

the girlfriend isn't too impressed ;)

I think you're looking at this the wrong way... I can picture the conversation now...

"Hey honey..."

"Yeah"

"You know how you didn't like it when I just spent over a thousand dollars on beer?"

"Yeah" *most likely a stern look*

*present $500 worth of gear to start AG'ing*

"Well...... I can make better beer forever now that I've just gone and spent HALF that amount"

*She smiles, hugs you, and says*

"You're my hero! You're doing wonders for our budget"

It's all how you market it... no?? :)

As I woman agonising over buying $250 worth of shiney stuff to make beer for HWMBO, while HWMBO merrily spends $100s (maybe $1000s i don't want to think) on sausage making equipment (because of course he only wants the professional stuff and its gotta be stainless) all I can say is ...

hmmmmm.

OK I'm on a rant now ...

HWMBO decided that for his birthday he really really needed a vacuum sealer ... for his sausages.
But darling you hardly ever make sausages.
Yeah but when I do its really important to vacuum seal them.
OOOOKKK.
So there's this stainless one that costs $500.
Right .. and there's a sunbeam one that costs $180.
Oh no that would be no good.
Because you're opening a butchers shop?
No but it just wouldn't be good enough for what we want.

Sigh!

Can't think of anything better to get him so I ring around and find I can get it for $300 from winequip and its not stainless, it just silver plastic. Now I'll have to convince him that it is the one he wanted because everything has to be stainless!
Honestly! Some men have big cars and some men have stainless equipment. What would freud say about that?

OK .. I've finished now .. sorry!

It's an opportunity to get what you know you'll use for your beer making, braufrau.

Oh, and not all men like shiny and there's no real need for it.

Maybe I can rename my brewery the SS Free brewery.

Perhaps there should have been a 'I AG but what to know what people voted for'. Clicking view results isn't permanent.

For those who aren't AGing due to complexity, it's not. No time? There are ways around that- such as overnight mashing- I've read threads with shift workers doing overnight mashing and it turning out quite well.

No worries. No "deal" as such. You just save on the postage.
Hope your car's a petrol miser though? :)
TP

Mazda2 zoom zoom - I work in the Valley afternoons/evenings and can do a loop to Logan no worries. If I can get the grain in the $3 - $4 bucks price range that would suit me. No ways I would go AG and get it freighted, I just bought 5 kilos to get the discount but the freight was $7.20 and thats a fair few hops!

Get involved in the bulk buys Bribie - save a fair few $$$ off the price of a sack...they seem to be happening every few months up this way :)

Cheers

A combo of all the usual for me, cost is a big one, space is scarce and time is also very limited :) That said, I may be still making the move if I manage to get the gear for the right price (friend has had it sitting in storage for years). I certainly want to make better quality beer and without some of the big upfront costs I'm very keen to try.

My wife.

:(

Boo hoo woe is me.

Kev

time, i have the hlt, mash tun, boiler all ready to go.( on the brew tree)
the mill, the motor, (not the main wheel for the motor), the want.
but not the time just not the time at the moment but am soooo close......cheers ...spog..........

What is good for the goose is good for the gander Braufrau.

Or have I got that one back to front?

cheers

Browndog

But Braufrau - you can use the vacumn sealer too.........that makes it twice as useful :D

And given that he drinks your beer, I personally think that $250 spent on your beer (especially as you just took out some prizes !!) is $250 spent on him. So it should really be him asking you if he can buy you what you need to make even better beer, as he enjoys it and you clearly have a talent for making it............seems like a win win for both to me :D
