I found this article amusing. I'm not to sure how much of a brewer the author is but its a good laugh.

After homebrewing for three years, Ive met a number of brewers. While we all are producing some decent beer, I have noticed some different trends behind the brewers attitude. What kind of brewer are you?

Full article here..

I reckon I am a bit of both the Gotta have it and the Instinctive.

Likewise, between the two! I've always started with a recipe and some how I decide to alter it mid brew, sometimes I write it down!

FRUGAL/TECHIE .

Can't afford to be a GOTTA HAVE IT

I think I fit across two categorisations. THE TECHIE and THE GOTTA HAVE IT :p

Start out frugal / techie but often change to instinctive during the brewing process. Maybe it's the few I drink while doing it - am I confused?

Frugal :(

SWMBO won't accommodate thousands of dollars being thrown at a hobby.
Hence I am trying to set up a keg system, by squirrelling bits and pieces away from time to time.

Getting there, albiet slowly.

However, there is a great deal to enjoy out of bottles or tap a draft in the interim ;)

instinctive
all the calculations and recipes and "oh, that's not how much crystal that syle should have" really takes the shine off brewing for me and puts it in the realm of tax-returns.

Well I like to think part of me is the Gotta have it now.
But finances dont always allow for it.

Was instinctive but evolving to Frugal/Techie with a few remaining hints of the instinctive when it comes to recipe formulation.

Don't understand the "gotta have it" types. My brew buddy and I are both frugal & make great beer with our plastic buckets, eskies and bent bits of copper.

I'm purely instinctive. Been known to nut out a recipe on Promash and change the hop additions (and forget to take notes) at the last second just for the heck of it all.

I like the present-like surprise of the unexpected in my beer. Hate to think I've cloned a brew I've done before.

Slight frugal leanings too. Rather spend dollars on good ingredients as opposed to loads of equipment.

I don't really fit in anythere unless he updates it and adds one with the title 'DRUNK'.

While i aim somewhere for 'techie' the 'drunk' part has reduced brain cells and i quite often have to resort to the text as the info is locked inside my mess of a brain and doesn't always want come out.
but i can't afford blank paper let alone books on brewing so i guess iam no techie.

As far as gear goes i'd be happy brewing with a couldren and a broom stick, I'd rather buy ingredients than 'toys'. Partly because i don't ussually have two pennies too rub together :beerbang:

Iam certainly not a 'show' because i don't have any friends to 'show'.

Iam certainly not instinctive, it takes me hours to prepare recipes and I certainly never change them on brewday.
I'am all traditional so much so i don't even shop at 'freedom furniture' because i don't understand their logo, 'think outside the square'

I can also subscribe to johnno's statement (Was peer pressure invented exclusively for AHB? :p ), although I think I have a lot of "Fugal" in me as well.
I reckon I have spotted a few "Shows" on this forum. They're not hard to work out.

I'll be stuck in the Frugal cycle forever.

When I drink I feel like building stuff.
I build stuff for making more beer.
After making beer I can't help drinking it.

Is there no escape? :chug:

None of them really. A touch of the techie, not really frugal except as far as the bank balance necessitates :( , not instinctive (like Jayse I never change my recipe on brew day), not gotta have it (see frugal, though I am buying heaps of stuff at the mo) and definitely not for show.

I like the process and I'll get the gear I think I need to get the process right, and spend money on yummy ingredients. At the end of the day, the taste is the main thing for me and I'm so glad I discovered the wonderful world of brewing. :p

I'm a bit of a gotta have it at the moment. However, like with all things I do I am working towards techie.

Got a touch of techie, gotta have it and frugal, I guess, but none of em seemed to fit me that well. However, I kinda prefer to drink my beers than the commercial stuff, so does that put me in the show part aswell? I never change my recipes on brewday, and I always keep good notes, but I am afraid I have no chemical know how. I spend money when I need to, but not stupidly, and I buy what I need, when I need it (though the last 2 brews, I have been using half a brew spoon!) Couldnt he have put in one for the average brewer? (whatever that is)
All the best
Trent

Don't like being pigeonholed

But I'm a tight arse brewer(frugal is to sissy) :p LOL
