Hi,

I have a recipe that calls for Super Alpha for a bittering addition, I have PoR handy, whats the difference?

POR, whilst a bittering hop, will also give earthy herbaceous flavours as you find in beers such as Coopers Sparkling. Super Alpha on the other hand is a much 'cleaner' hop suited to NZ style beers which can truly be super-clean ; Summit Lager and Tui are a couple of examples from the Mega range over there. Didn't actually mind them as a refreshing quaffer after tramping the streets and working up a thirst, when I visited recently.
 
Super Alpha is used as the bittering hop in James Squire Golden Ale too I gather.

Also used in Boatrocker Alpha Queen with is a lovely beer IMHO. Linky:Boatrocker Alpha Queen

Not to be confused with Super Pride.

Just used some of that in a very small amount in an Aussie Ale and it came up Super Rough.
Tastes subtly like POR but only just - much sharper.

Hopefully cellaring will improve - sigh.

I was disappointed with Super Pride in my Aussie Ale as well, hard to beat good old POR for an Aussie.
Super Alpha I have not tried.

I belive POR will bring additional earthiness as well as bitterness, Super Alpha, although I havent used it I believe it is cleaner and does not have the earthiness of POR.
 
I like to think of PoR as cigars and cedar and horses and leather and Amarillo as your Nana's perfume.

American beer smells like yo Nana. Aussie beer smells like the Man from Snowy River probably smelled if he wasn't fictional.

Super Alpha? Green isohop.
 
POR........... Love it. Its got a character all to itself and tends to be a love or hate thing. As said before..... its earthy and is best if fresh..... and in flower form. If they have been sitting for a while un-vac packed....... they can get a bit cheesy. I get no cheese as some people find but i use fresh flowers only! If i dont use all in a pack i toss them rather than keep them. But i always manage to use all of a pack :)

Sothern Cross............ Man i love this hop. I dont use it too often so that when i do use it i go....... oh WOW! It has very low cohumulone levels so it delivers a super smooth biitterness, and tops it off with a wonderful fresh lemony citrus flavour and aroma thats just so crisp, clean and refreshing. I love my POR but this hop could turn me i tell ya....... so i dont use it too much :ph34r:

For me POR is like having Elle Mcpherson for a wife and Sothern Cross is the 18 year old super model that drops by now and then when the wife is away :p

Super Alpha is a lovely hop. It's got a smooth but firm, slightly resiny, bitterness. Used later in the boil I find it to have a slight almost passionfruit hint with a resiny punch. I love using it late in APA/IPAs, in conjunction with more aromatic varieties, to 'firm up' that late hop hit.

I think POR has been pretty well covered.

For bittering I think you should be fine subbing POR.
 
err guys, just so the masses are clear with the similiar names

super alpha = nz hp
super pride = aus hop

dont confuse the two.

never used super alpha, super pride on the other hand i really enjoy, especially in a CAP. :icon_drool2:

ive never experienced the offensive bittering with this hop. i quite like it.
 
Super Alpha would have to be one of the cleanest bittering hops I have used, really impressed with the lagers I have used it in, infact my next brew will be a lager with Super Alpha for bittering and finished with Riwaka (Saaz D) I've been hanging out to make this again.

Very happy with Super Pride in the Aussie Ales I have made using it and would probably prefer it over POR but only by a bee's whisker.

Sothern Cross............ Man i love this hop.

Hell yeah, Tony. SC is such an underrated hop. Massive bittering potential, but mellow. It's a supurb lager hop.

+1 Love POR and adore Southern Cross for its smoothness.

Super Alpha i've not used but I have some growing in the garden now so we'll see in the Autumn. Fresh PoR off the bine and fresh Super Alpha off the bine. Now I just need to get that 18 yr old into the garden as well and I'm in hop heaven.
