I have received a birthday present of a Muntons Gold toucan Old English Bitter and intend to brew it as is with no additions. (Well maybe just a teensie late hop EKG :p ) However I wonder about the kit yeast, does anyone have any experience with the Muntons? I have Wyeast West Yorkshire 1469 and UK Bitter 1768 or would that be like casting pearls to swine?

Never done that kit Bribie, but if you've got some decent liquid yeast I'd be using that instead of the yeast under the lid. You dont know how long its been sat on a shelf for.
Cheers

I have not used the Muntons extract kit yeast but I have used the Muntons Premium Gold dried yeast sachets before (the ones that are sold separately), and have achieved some nice results. I'm guessing the yeasts supplied are the same, but I'd be using one of the liquid yeasts you have mentioned as they would be superior IMHO (unless you are saving them for something else). The question mark for me would be how viable the kit yeast is given that you don't know how it has been treated before it found it's way into your hands. If you are keen, put it in a starter overnight and if it kicks on in a vigourous, healthy fashion then feel free to use it. Otherwise stick with the liquid yeasts.

I've used the muntons premium gold yeast (bought separately) and found it to be a good dehydrated yeast. Maybe a quick email to muntons might shed some light on the strain of yeast (if it's the same as the one supplied with the kit).

When I used it I was told to definatly not rehydrate it first, just sprinkle over the top of the wort and give a gentle stir after a couple of minutes. If you used the yeast and it didn't work you could always pitch one of the others you have.

edit. spelling

I've done the Muntons Gold Old English Bitter using only the two cans and kit yeast. The yeast that comes with the kit yeast is pretty good quality. I gave a bottle to a couple of Englishmen and they gave it a big thumbs up. I've enjoyed it myself both from the bottle and the keg, and I'm an Aussie born and bred.

Can't comment whether it would be better to use a Wyeast instead, as I don't have enough experience with this type of beer!

+1 for the Muntons Gold. It's reputed to hold up well in warmer brews and did exactly that when I tried it. Kinda like S-04 but nicer in a more 'Pommy' way. Hard to explain... give it a shot... am sure you won't be disappointed.

Cheers - Fermented.

Thanks for the comments, being a trusting soul it had never occurred to me that the kit has travelled months and thousands of Ks from its birthplace. I won't be using it till I get back from Sydney early Feb so I've put the yeast in the fridge to get it out of the 30 degree heat, It's no doubt been at shop temps which shouldn't be too bad, and I'll have two bob each way when I get back and try a nice big starter with it before I even open the tins. :icon_cheers:
