Melbourne Grain Bulk Buy - May 10

OK, so it's been only a few months since the last Melbourne grain BB, but I missed out and am running low. Having enjoyed the fruits of BB's in the past, I'm happy to volunteer. The intention is to run this latest BB through Craftbrewer - I've been keen to try TF malted grain for some time, not to mention the mighty attractive fall in malt price. Spoke with Ross yesterday, who confirmed all was good from his end.

I'm volunteering to:
1. administer the BB, collect $ and pay CraftBrewer etc.
2. collect the grain consignment from Cryer Malts (it's a Mon-Fri job)
3. provide my home as a grain collection point

This BB is for one pallet only, which means a minimum 20 sacks and maximum 36 sacks of 25kg grain. The BB can only go ahead if we meet the 20 sack minimum quota, and clearly, will close if and when the 36 bag maximum is reached.

A tentative date for pick up is Saturday 15 May 10. If that's too ambitious, then we can stretch a little, but please definitely within May.

Usual rules apply re split bags (ie. organise amongst yourselves but someone has to order a full bag). First in, best dressed etc

AndyTork, No JW on Craftbrewers list so its doubtful. Weyermann Munich is still a pretty good price @ $44 bucks. I'd jump right on it!

I want to make some belgians (duvel, delirium tremens) as well as explore pilsner malt as i haven't used it yet. I'm intrigued by the BB pilsner galaxy - having higher diastatic power - or is that true of all pilsner malts? Is there much difference?

And where are the prices?

IMO use any pilsner. The diastatic power of the pilsner malt between brands will make sweet F-all difference in your results. Even ones with a reported higher power value. Really you are going with what you like out of the grain itself. Personally i dont mind JW pilser and would use that over wyermann as its also 1/2 its price. Made two pilsners with identical recipes, just different malt brands with almost identical results.

JW pilsner character was sweeter and the wyermann was much more doughy. Horses for courses.

Anyone interested in splitting some crystal malt (light or dark) or bairds golden promise?

Speaking from experience I can recommend sticking with base malts unless you brew really big batches or every second day. I bought 25 kg of biscuit malt in my first bulk buy (been in 3 now). I use it in nearly every brew as I love it, have given away 10kg on this forum and still have close to 10kg left.

Malt does eventually go stale.
