Mash Tun Design

Hi all,
I'm just stepping up to mini-mash brewing and I'm trying to devise a way to make a mash tun that avoids using an esky/cooler as I'm a firm believer in hot liquids and plastic don't mix..

So at the moment I have a 12L stainless pot and no idea...

My oven will only go as low as 70 degC, so that rules that out..

I maybe can get some insulation exhaust wrap stuff from work, kinda looks like old skool space suits

Any suggestions please?

Camping mat and a roll of gaffa tape will give you good insulation. You can also simply wrap it up in towels etc for the duration of the mash. maybe keep it simple/lo-cost atm, as if the mash bug bites hard, you'll no doubt be headed toward full mash and be looking for a larger vessel.

Sure, I've been doing that all morning, esky,cooler,esky,esky,cooler,cooler, stainless keg.. and sure I can convert an old keg could even be on the cards but what does one do to keep the heat in?

Did you read my post above?

Keeping the lid on will help keep the heat in! Jokes aside, you can also rest a piece of al-foil, cut up camping mat etc on the surface of the mash if your space above the mash inside the vessel/pot is too much.

The liquid and grains will have a certain thermal mass, however if you are only doing mini-mashes a converted keg will be too large (i.e you will have a lot of air above the mash and this will rob you of heat).

camping mats (the blue ones) are a very common and cheap solution around here. Some people secure them with tape, others with occy straps.

There are plenty of insulation options out there, it is all a matter of how much you want to spend.

Sorry my reply was aimed at Bum..

But Sj, your reply has given me an idea..

A mate of mine deals with hot water systems. So if I can get a 50L system, gut it, cut it down, I may just end up with a small and free insulation box,well cylinder..

just a thought..
