Really? Any reason behind that?

Let me preface my post by saying these volumes are from my personal travels and some of the places I quote were visited many years ago and things may have changed since then.

Dont know the history - but here are some examples:
NSW schooner = 425mL
Stubby = 375mL (traditionally) but some are now 330mL - AFAIK Oz wide.
Twist-top = 250mL AFAIK Oz wide.
Tallie or longnck = 750mL - again some are smaller at 700mL
S.A. schooner = 285mL which also = NSW middy = Qld pot = Vic pot.
Last time I was in Melbourne they did have 425mL schooners at some pubs, but that might have been a marketing ploy as you could only get tooheys red in the 425mL schooners. Tooheys is NSW.
When I was in S.A. and ordered a schooner, was given a middy (being from NSW) size. Thats how I found out. S.A. also has butchers & pony's - smaller again.
Maybe someone from S.A. can tell us if these sizes still exist over there?
Then there's the Darwin stubby = 2L, but it's more of a novelty than a regular drink size. When in Darwin they drank NSW middy size as standard serving.
So any locals want to correct my dated experiences?

Maybe this is the topic for another thread. My Grandmother always ordered ponies in Vic, although most pubs have no idea what that is these days.
A glass is also orderable in about half the pubs in Vic.

Also, only VB's come in stubbies, longnecks around where I live are all those other shapes that range in volume from 330-375ml.

750ml is a tallie.

Saw a website recently that had all the different lingo spelt out...can't find it now :(

On Topic, probably average 1 stubbie a night.

You can get butchers (250mL?) in most pubs, usually just for soft drinks. No man asks for a butcher of beer :). Haven't ever seen a pony (150mL?) in a pub in the 5-6 years I've been drinking.

Most pubs just have pints (425mL, <_<) and schooners (285mL), but some classier pubs/British pubs have proper pints (other pubs call them Imperial Pints) and half-pints (i.e. SA schooner).

Back on topic... I have 2-4 AFDs per week, other days I'll have 1-2 beers (stubbies/glasses) max on my own.

somewhere between zero and one I guess... I only usually have one or two in a week. So I guess on average that's closer to being between 1/7 and 2/7 :p

So a butcher is a 7oz and a pony is a 5oz. Used to love drinking a few cold 7oz on hot qld summer day but you need a good barstaff that knows to pour the next one when you lift for the last mouth full. These days they charge too much for a 7 and encourage people to drink schooners.

Actually now I think about a 7oz isnt 250ml i think it was 175ml.........oh just disregard what I say. !.5 days left till 3 weeks off yahoo.

When I arrived in QLD in the late 70s I lived in Bundaberg for a few years, beer came in 7s which were 200ml and 10s - 285ml from memory.

No schooners (15 oz) until I think about early 90s when Tooheys and XXXX merged. In metro Brisbane they had 8 oz glasses instead of 7s.

Haven't seen a 7 for ages but I think the bowls clubs still do them for elderly people.

Five years ago on my first visit to Victoria (Geelong) the bar staff at the Waurn Ponds pub were horrified when I asked for a schooner "doesn't the beer get too hot in Queensland in such big glasses?"
Two years ago on my second visit there they had schooners and pints :) . And at the Bended Elbow in town, pints were de rigeur.

It all depends, but I have been thirsty of late, and I'm trying to have 3ish% beers available for that reason.
Sometimes 0ml, sometimes 375ml, sometimes 2,000ml weekend or weekday doesn't always work out, had less beer in total on the weekend than I did mon night (old friend over for Xmas from UK).

On topic, I have a widely vaired consumption of beer, dpending on whats happening. Average would probably be 0.3-0.5 per day. I don't generally drink through the week, maybe the odd one or two if I've done something I think warrants a drink, or there is company for dinner. On a Friday/Saturday with mates, and then out on the town, its totally different; consumption is somewhat ridiculous...minimum would be 3 longnecks at home and a few schooners while out, this tend to increase if it changes at all.

Off topic, I've always known a Middie as 285ml, a Schooner as 425ml and a Pint as 570ml. You can get the 7's if you want them...but I've never ordered one. Then there are litres and half-litres which are mostly a European thing but are quite enjoyable nonetheless. Bottle sizes I've seen are 250ml for boutique and micro-brewery offerings, as well as twisties; 250, 330, 345 and 375ml for commercial stubbies [although a lot of bottles in this range fall under the 'longneck' tag because of their...you work it out!], 750ml for true longnecks/tallies [although they were at 800ml for a while?], and 640ml for specialty stuff like the Malt Shovel Rasperry Witbier or other larger premium offerings.

While I'm here I'll say that some of the most handsome bottles I've seen are the VB Original Recipe bottles, along with the Hollandia ones which are a welcome change from the standard 'green premium' bottle most euro stuff uses. Red Oak micro uses nice bottles too, similar to the VB OR bottles but smaller.

Cheers all - boingk

I used to knock back 6-8 per night, am more restrained these days..

Minimum 2 AFD per week, any night I have work the next day, max 4 stubbies, nights with no work the next day, open slather....

2-3 longies on average. Sometimes more, sometimes less. When I'm doing renovation work on the weekends, I don't count as I start around lunch time and go long and slow for the day - maybe 5 to 7 from 13:00 to 22:00.

When we used to drink Euro-megaswill, it would be 2 or three stubbies at most but since we started on this homebrew lark the consumption has gone up massively. Drinking Aussie and European mass produced 'standard' beers usually left us feeling pretty ordinary in the morning, far worse if we had a martini or two on the weekend.

However, HB doesn't seem to have the same negative effect so we kick back on the balcony most evenings and talk lots and have a few brews with some snacks to unwind before cooking etc. Seriously, I feel much healthier for the change.

Cheers - Fermented.

Normally 2 to 3 schooners in the arvo on weeknights, and 5 to 6 on the weekend. I try and have a couple of AFD's a week, but that doesnt always happen.

Depends on time of year too.

Cheers

Oh look my glass is empty...

Usually 3-5 afd's per week depending on weather/stress levels/>insert event< and normally only 4 schooners on Friday and Saturday nights, a couple on Sunday while cooking dinner... a 19L keg lasts around 4-6 weeks.

Sometimes a beer is going down sooo well that I may have 5 or 6 or 8 schooners before I know it....those kegs tend to run out sooner than others!

Just had 4 tonight which is unusual...must be the season.

First 2 kegs on tap lasted 3 weeks = 38litres / 3weeks = 12.6 litres per week = 1.8 litres per day = 4.25 schonners a day...

Shit it's hot in Summer and due to the fact I work in a extremely hot kitchen, the beer is even more appettising.. :chug:

During Winter months consumption is about half that of these hot summer months....

I find that when im stressed i wont drink at all but when i'm fairly happy i usually sink about 6 a night in the week and countless on the weekends.

You must have something else when you are stressed?? :p Because when im under pressure, I get right into the beers...

Mind you, I dont smoke and only have a puff every now and again, love my beer.... And Wine.... And Spirit...

Im not an alcoholic..

I go through a keg of homebrew a week plus commercial stuff on weekends (at girlfriends place) and have found my weight to be increasing. Will have to have some AFD's or start an exercise regime in the new year or both. In general I am enjoying myself and coping well with work. Oh and I sleep well too! :)
