Most of the lagers i've done i've lagered first, but i think lots of other people do it the other way around for faster results. Some yeast still gets through the filter, it's probably enough to clean up the beer.

Sorry mate now i feel like i'm harrassing you but, i'll go your way and lager first in a keg.

Does that mean that ill just have to let the gasses out via the kegs releif valve every so often?

If so, how often?

nah it's bugger all.
if you over sparge (and/or you pH is way off) you can extract tannins which is what Rob2 was thinking.

but with a only 1.7lt sparge it's not likely to be a big issue. This is what Screwy was getting at.

A3k answered for me. Little confused  maybe you BIAB? Conventional brewing you would mash around 2.75L/Kg using around 9.5 L then sparge with around 12L of sparge water for a preboil of 16+ litres and the gravity should be around 1.048 @ a low efficiency of around 60%.

I did BIAB mate if that helps

It could be just me but I find diacetyl has a grainy taste.

I do agree with the diacetyl and grainy taste BUT what I have found is diacetyl is butterscotch flavour and when it also has the grainy taste as well it has been a combination of diacetyl and a poor boil.

I wouldn't be too pedantic about letting the gas out too often. You can also lager in a cube if you don't have any spare kegs, however kegs have a advantage of being able to filter to another keg really easy.

I don't know the taste of diacetyl other than reading it tastes like buttershotch. I've got a suspision that I'm one of those people who can't taste it.
However, pitching at 30C would likely cause it going by the How To Brew book.
