Does anyone with experience in Hallertau hops know if they are supposed to smell like blue cheese - this is the first time I've used them, but all the descriptors I've read indicate nice things, not cheesey. It's also the first time I've had a cheesey smelling hop. what's the cause? are they off?

edit: Brewmergency averted - going to sub them out and not risk it. still interested in hearing what you fellas think though

back to sparging.

It doesn't sound good, they are meant to have a pleasant spicy aroma.

Where did you get them, how have they been stored and what year are they from?

Cheers,
BB

I got these from a mate, as I was limited in time to get an order placed and delivered in time. not sure how old, but would have been stored in his freezer. AA was 4.6, so I could reverse engineer the crops and figure out the harvest probably, but really not overly concerned. they will be used up in a lambic soon enough.

the aroma just threw me, i like blue cheese, but perhaps not in my beer.

i haven't had any hops Of my own go bad (yet)

However "Cheesy" is exactly how others have described to me how you know when hops have gone bad.

Rub the hops on a block of brie :icon_drool2: that's a Penicillium roqueforti infection...
