G'day,

I'd like a list of recommended pubs in Adelaide.
I have a friend (and he's a really nice bloke too) who's working there for 4 weeks, and I'd like to send him to some decent pubs with a decent drop or two available. :chug:

I have recommended the Austral, and that's mainly coz I had some tasty aged Coopers Sparkling Ale there on my last visit.

I reckon every city should have a list like this, and as I couldn't find one, lets kick it off here.
Bring it on! :beerbang:

the Wheatie - George Street, Thebarton
ummm, you already said the Austral
Grace Emily is ok...
That's about it.

Surely it depends entirely on the type of pub your friend prefers (and his age)?

The Austral is a great pub if you like a young scene with loud bands and standing room only. At the other extreme there's Charlie's bar at the Hilton (also has Coopers on tap) - young professional-types but a much quieter scene.

My favourites (and I'm not exactly young) are the many small, old pubs around the city (e.g. the Gilbert) that serve a good beer and where you can have a conversation without yelling.

There are many websites you could search for pubs in Adelaide - here's one :

http://www.adelaidepubs.com.au/

Your idea of starting a list of pubs is great, but it would have to be qualified - your idea of a "great pub" ain't necessarily mine!

exactly Ol'Wobbly! Even the Wheatie gets to the stage when there's no chance of a conversation unless you like yelling in each others ears.
The Gilbert Street hotel is good.

If your friend enjoys funnelling gold coins into pokies, beer that tastes like dishwater and staff who seem quite distressed at being asked to do their jobs, there's a multitude of hotels in Adelaide he'll love.

Only been to Adel 3 times but i like the vodka selection at the crown and sceptre.

And waiting for ages because (certainly during the day) they have virtually no staff on...

My favourite for daytime is the Exeter in Rundle Street - Coopers on Tap (mild 3.50 a SA pint, Stout 4.50 a SA Pint) and a greet kitchen. Matter of fact I'm feeling peckish now.

Is a bit "rustic" - not sure if its stout or something else that created the @#$% hit the fan effect in the saloon area.No affiliation but the fact the staff greet my 3 year and 5 year old by name suggests I've been going there for a while!

Still haven't done the Wheatie and I only live a suburb away...

 Enoch, we must go for an evening walk soon!

I s'pose you guys can let us know what you feel is great about each venue, and readers can make their own decision.

I'm gonna recommend Grumpy's Brewhaus to him too.

He's also keen to get out to Hahndorf, but I have no idea what's out there.
Happy enough to send him out to Glenelg, to the Grand (especially of an evening/ weekend).

He's a Dad, who's away from home, and looking for a range of beers to expand his tasting repertoire.

I hesitate to mention, but I like the Southwark Pale (aka The Green Death), and would like to know where he can get some of that, as well as the Southwark Stout.

Any reasons why he shouldn't visit the Port Dock Brewery and get into some "Old Preacher" and /or "Black Diamond Bitter"?

Les out :p

Les, if your mate has transport there are some good pubs outside of Adelaide as well.

The Three Brothers Arms at Maccelsfield is a quaint "English style" pub with excellent food and Old Speckled Hen on tap plus a range of bottled English and Scottish beers.

The Victory Hotel at Sellicks Beach has fantastic views and Coopers on tap, also good grub.

Obviously the Steam Exchange, Grumpys and Lobethal Bierhaus as well.

The Wheatsheaf, as others have mentioned, is a must visit pub.
The Earl of Leicester in Parkside isn't too bad and I think still has a good range of beer.
Prince Albert and Worlds End are two reasonable pubs in the city.

Sounds good. Maybe with the first drink at the Darebin Street Brewery.

Been absolutely yonks since I've been to Adelaide but was a regular there in the early eighties on R & R from the NT. A favourite haunt then was (I think it was called) The Lion (on North Terrace ?) and I'm sure I was often dragged to the British (?) somewhere past North Adelaide. The Wheatie .. is that a new name for the "Golden Sheaf" that used to be in Thebie ?

So many memories, so many dead brain cells !!

Like someone else said it all depends what your after.
heres a few, proberly not for your mate but i'll add them for the 'I reckon every city should have a list like this, and as I couldn't find one, lets kick it off here.' factor

Heres a few for late nites out on the tiles in the main entertainment districts in the city.

If your after a late nite completely packed out irish git place playing all the ussual sort of comericial music way to loud and picking up a hot young chick with no taste whatso ever (I say no taste whatso ever because anyone who goes there has no real taste in music or nite life) try PJ obriens on east terrace.
Its hot and sticky and it may take you 15mins to get a drink after 10-11pm. But some people like that stuff, hence why it gets packed out, really shitty coverbands aswell. During the day its a OK drinking hole though if irish bars are your thing.
Pretty much all the irish git places are the same as that late at nite, I guess everywhere not just Adelaide.

If casino is your thing thats open all hours and theres a few bars, a couple of which you can actually hear yourself think in and ussually people are friendly, I don't really recommend them so much but I hit them every so often for a hit of black jack and some roulette, pale and sparkling on tap and I don't think its expensive. Allthough I always seem to leave with no money I don't thinks its because of the beer price.

Naked dancing ladies?
hindley st theres Crazy horse, Club 108 or if your a bit more swish The Palace all within a few metres of each other, or if your that way inclined theres a male revue somewhere< no I don't know exactly where

The local metal scene is pretty big
enigma bar a couple fridays a month, fowlers live (not just metal but a gig venue were some national and international bands play), The lizard lounge or the magil club just out of town on saturdays. Crown and anchor in a pinch but thats more uni no taste stuff but during the day its OK, coopers and james squires etc.
Local metal gig guide here adresses for venues on there somewhere aswell. Give the crown and anchor a wide birth maybe if you have a fear of emo kids.

Worlds end just across the road from enigma bar down hindley st west, A bar with james squire and good crowds, not your PJ obrien type punters! Pretty normal crowds. The enigma bar is more a specific scene joint from bogan metal > punk > goth > emo > hardcore > glam metal and all in between etc. Pretty cheap swill to be had as thats all those sort of punters can afford.

Belgian beer cafe < a actaull real recommendation for everyone unlike a few I posted above. its just down from the exeter and austral in ebenezer place.

A nicer place on hindley st is a relatively new place called the dog and duck, 24 beers on tap and more in the fridge. Of the 24 only a couple are worthwhile and different like rogers, the rest is the ussuall you get everywhere. mountain goat and LC in the fridge and a couple others I can't recall.
Worth a drink in there.

Euro bar up the track toward the mall of hindley st you'll find a nicer bar with gulf brewery beers in bottles, not a bad bar and worth a look.

If your own a ute with a bundy sticker etc and a cowboy hat then the woolshed on hindley st would be the place for you to go.

Theres a few for now.
Sorry I know some of these reviews arn't very great but hey theres a time and a places for all sorts at least when I'am out on the tiles.

Thanks to others for reminding me about Grumpy's. It's definitely a must. We went there for a wedding reception last year - they had four magnificent brewed-on-the-premises beers on tap. Also, their wood-fired gourmet pizzas are out of this world. It's a bit out of the way if you're staying in town, but if you have wheels go up the freeway about 15k, turn off at the Hahndorf exit and you'll see it on the left.

The Old Lion and British Arms in North Adelaide. Had a very memorable Sunday afternoon in the beer garden of the British Arms about 15 years ago. Would like to relate the story, but this would probably be my last post on here.

Cheers

Speaking of the Earl of Leicester...

There's also the Earl of Aberdeen, also known as the Coopers Alehouse on Pulteney street in town. They also have giant schnitzels about the same size as the Leicester. (These Earls must've been pretty large.) They have all Coopers on tap including the Vintage, unfortunately all well and truly overcarbed but that's normal.

There's the German club somewhere which I've heard (from a German) that it's pretty good, never been there though. The Belgian is great, good food, good beer, shitty atmosphere at night though.

Im hungry now!

Hi Les

I live and work in the Adelaide CBD and although 36 and married I still get out on the town most weekends, so here's my list.

Worlds End - James Squire beers on tap plus Coopers. Mainly a uni bar as it's right next to the UniSA City East campus. You get a mix of uni students and staff, however as the night gets longer the crowd gets younger.

Prince Albert Usual Coopers on tap. Nice relaxed bar with good pub grub

FAD Beers on tap vary, but often include Gulf Brewery. Small hole in the wall bar, doesnt get busy, has a slight alternative jazz feel to it. Has a small art gallery upstairs that you can look at when you need to take a leak.

Old Lion (North Adelaide) - Large range of common commercial beers, plus a few like Rooftop Red Lager. Mixed age groups. Well dressed trendy crowd but not the pretentious wanker IT crowd.

Bar on Gouger Average tap beer. Large Bottled beer collection. Varied crowd. Expensive.

European Union Large range of common commercial beers plus others like Matilda Bay Bohemian Pilsner. Busy after work bar, particularly on Friday when its full of office workers. Often some good eye candy.

Belgium Beer Bar no need to elaborate

German Club Standard Coopers on tap, plus a few commercial German beers. Some good bottled German beers. Busy on a Friday after work. Good place for a feed.

Archer Hotel (North Adelaide) Coopers on tap plus Alpha Pale Ale. Can get very busy. Age of the crowd can vary. Has TVs with the footy in the background, but is not a sports bar, more like a bar where ex-private school footballers and their dolly birds go.

On the weekend I went to the Lobethal Bierhouse. They had 3 beers on tap, an APA, Porter and a Hefe. All very tasty. One of the owners gave me a sample of the an IPA test batch. When it warmed up it was also pretty good. Food is not too bad. Would recommend the Best of the Wurst. Problem is that there is bugger all in Lobethal except for the brewery, but there are plenty of surrounding wineries.

There are plenty of other good bars, but they are not beer orientated, like the Lotus Lounge, La Boheme, Botanic, Tonic..Theyre worth going to for a night out on the razzle.

Cheers

For a great range of beers (imported) in bottles and Australian (Moo Brew & Little Creatures) on tap go the Wheatie. If he is looking for reare beers see David Gill at the bottlo at the Royal Oak.

Don't miss The Steam Exchange at Goolwa and the Lobethal Bierhause. :super:

Great state for beer

The Edinburgh Hotel otherwise known as the ED, in Mitcham was my local for many many years. Located in a beautiful old building it has the best beer garden you are ever likely to see.
