hey guys,

read through a few fridgemate threads and still want to be sure as ever fridge seems a bit different. mine is an old kelvinator FN360T upright freezer with an installed fan.
the controller is a DEI 105A
http://www.craftbrewer.com.au/shop/details.asp?PID=889

what concerns me is the controller has a transformer to supply 12VAC which then goes to the compressor. and then, i suppose to the fan as well?

however, and this is where my questions start, does the fridge already have its own transformer for 12VAC? if not, is there a problem using this controller?

the closest thread i could find which looks like what i need is here:
http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/inde...7&hl=wiring

and has a link to this site which also looks about right (except, importantly, for the transformer):

not sure what the black round plastic bit is?

thanks, joe

Im sure the 12v transformer is just to supply power to the controller. The relay in the controller handles the 240v for the fridge/freezer. check out http://www.mashmaster.com/UserFiles/2321-F...20DEI%20105.pdf

edit - note the fridgemate doesnt have a transformer & hence different wiring to the dei105 (!). the helms-deep page is useful but the wiring details do not apply

ahh, thanks buddy :icon_cheers:
makes sense. just have to get one of those wiring strips.

as for the fan, would that just use the same output from the controller so both fan and compressor are going at the same time?

I have a 12v plugpack for the fan. never thought to try wiring to the 12v transformer ...

ok, so there should be a transformer on the freezer already for the fan?
thanks, its starting to come together. might bribe a sparky at work to come by and have a closer look.

I doubt it. I've used a chest freezer, and four different fridges over the past years, from 20year old things right through to brand new this year, and none of them have had a 12VAC transformer on them.

aving an intimate knowledge of your freezer Joe, it is a frost free so it has a fan built into it, most likely this will be a 240V fan

My guess is the "black round plastic" thing is the starting capacitor for the compressor motor.

If you look at the wiring diagram, the 12V transformer if for the controller itself.

There was another thread about 2 weeks ago where a fridgey said the best way to wire up a freezer controller, it wasn't by putting the controller across the feed power.

seems i'm making this more complicated than it really is
will have a shot at it tonight if i have time. thanks benhobbs and glen.

glen, you going to beerfest on saturday?

Hadn't thought about it I will need to check what the social planner has to say.
