without wanting to get into the middle of a good old bun-fight.....what is a HLT, if not a large kettle? Anyone?

FFS read the whole post, generally you want to set a HLT to maintain a constant temp which is what this "HLT controller" cannot do. On the other hand with a kettle or still it is handy to be able to vary the power input to control the intensity of your boil, which is what this "HLT controller" will do
