Chipping a Diesel

What vehicle/engine did you chip?
What brand of chip did you use?
Was it necessary to Dyno the engine when fitting the chip?
What increase in torque and power (Kw's) did you get?
Was the change noticeable when driving/towing?
What problems/issues (if any) have you had since fitting?
How much did it cost?
Did you fit the chip yourself or have the supplier do it?
Given your time over would you do it again?

Mate chipped his diesel Patrol, I think with a Roo Systems chip? But not sure. He's said a little bit more power, but problems after problems afterwards - biggest one a power drop once he hits about 90kph before picking up again at nearly 100kph. From what he's told me he's been back to the mechanics a few times to try and sort it out, but they have basically tried to wash their hands of it saying it must be a problem elsewhere in the car and not helping any further.

Did the workshop supply and fit the unit or did your mate supply it? If the former and its something they specialise in then I'd expect them to fix the problem or atleast revert it back to factory. If your mate supplied it and asked them to fit it I can understand them not wanting to touch it.

Were any other mods completed ie injectors, pump, turbo, exhaust?

Has he called Roo Systems (or other manufacturer) for advice?

There should always be an increase in fuel economy and power, it just depends on your car and what they can get out of it that the OG manufacturer already hasnt.

The Roo Systems chips are considered to be one of the best, they shouldnt have trouble, if they do, get your car tuned and checked by them.

If your going to spend the money on a chip, make sure you've updated your air intake (high flow air filter, cold air induction/snorkle) and updated your exhaust, from the turbo back, not pissy small dump pipe back.

Check your power and fuel consumption after that, and THEN look at chips.

A good mate has a steinbauer plug in chip in a 3.0L GU Ute, he also has an on board engine computer that tells him everything, and he can not only feel the results of it, but he has it infront of him in numbers, both fuel economy and more power, couldnt tell you figures, but his stoked with it.

I wouldn't touch ANYTHING roo systems.

DP chip or Dtronic or steinbauer and a decent tuner IMO (Dtronic being my preferred) plus you want to block EGRs and get it breathing better with RAI/airbox mods and a free flowing exhaust.

BUT theres no gains without risk and I don't trust modern diesels with their fancy computer controlled IPs.

I looked at chipping my LR D3 HSE 2.5L TDV6 but I don't trust it not to get the EGTs high and start melting pistons.

On the other hand my TD42T GU II I'm looking at LPG fumigation or ethanol/water injection, quick spooling turbo with external waste gate, tuned length intake manifold and laminova W2A intercooling. But that's cause I trust 30yr old tried and true technology... Looking for 220kW-ish at the threads on 315/75R16s. Should be achievable and very drivable.

The mechanic supplied the system; they supposedly "specialise" in them. Bollocks!!

Even if you took the system to them and they ****** it up - they were happy to take the money to fit it, they should get the thing working right!

Having said all that, I wouldn't bother chipping mine. The cost vs power/torque doesn't sit nice with me. If ya need so extra go power, jettison some weight - like the handbrake! Haha

I've got a T11 winch and in hind sight I should have bought either an avenger or a runva. I also bought a high lift jack - that promptly went into the scrap metal bin after my first attempt to use it and it collapsed on me when the ratchet didn't bite properly. I have no idea why you would trust these cheap chips with a $10k + engine when they can't even get a high lift right.

I find it laughable when people get change from $600 for a 12000 LB dyneema roped winch, then become outraged because the thing **** itself. When you give into temptation like that, expect to get ******.

I have a tigerz Roof Top Tent, im happy as a pig in **** with it. I've camped in hot summer and cold winter with it, in rain and fairly high coastal winds, and dragged it to Birdsville and back also, and its done me well. The only thing was the holes were drilled in the wrong spot for the flyscreen cover things, i just re drilled them and it was sweet. Got a couple of other bits and bobs from them also that all seem to work ok, but i'm a plant mechanic / auto electrician so I can fiddle with them and fix them. If I wasn't, I would probably buy decent gear that'd last longer and be built stronger.

I dont see the point in chipping a standard diesel. If it has been modded then yes. The manufacturers spend huge amounts of money on an engine. Sure it has to be a "be all motor for everyone" but adding a chip is going to take something away from the motor to make up for the gain the chip gives. I know people who think that because they chipped there petrol car that doing their deisel will acheive the same.

Spot on with this. An engine at heart is just a big air pump. Improve your cold air intake side and exhaust side first. A better intercooler to lower charge air temps ( turbo engines) and a free flowing exhaust is a good start before worrying about changing injector timing or duration. Again it depends on the engine. I wouldn't bother with most modern common rails as the fuel injection management and emission control are too sensitive to start making major modifications without bringing up engine lights and failsafe modes. Your older stuff however...
