I've been reading this thread with great interest but just have one question regarding the evolving bulk buy :-

How does all this import get past Quarantine?

Does the selling company have a clearance to import to Australia?

Does the importer? I expect the hops would be minimally processed meaning it isn't sterilised or otherwise rendered biologically inert?

Anyone working in the industry know what the story is these days?

I recall that Little Creatures was importing hops flowers from the Willamette Valley and they were used and then the hops destroyed under Quarantine supervision.

Cheerz Wabster

I was wondering about quarantine too, have been involved some time ago in trying to get quarantine approval for fungii
from europe.
Spent months and months on it - although these were viable for growing over here so a bit more of a threat I suspect.

Wouldn't hop pellets be irradiated before shipping? I thought that's what was done with the european imports.

Anyone know more about this?

My my there are some who see storms not rain.

To keep all in the loop, there are minor hurdles to jump, BUT nothing serious. You would think we never import things from China. Bloody hell I am now buying heaps of stuff from overseas dirrect. There is no real hassle.

I still have to
1. Establish the year of the hops.
2. Whether The supplier is an full exporter/importer (no paperwork my end).
3. If not whether I do the importing or get the local chinese stor shop to do it for me.
4. Although I know there is no problem with importing pellets (a double check with quarantine just to make sure)
5. A check on the company to make sure I dont lose my money
6. How to pay.

So yes a couple of little hoops to jump thru, BUT the world does this all the time. Its no biggie.

Oh

This is starting to get a little big. I had planned on a few kilo's not half of Chinas supplies.

BUT I think I limit it to

40kg Saaz
40kg Nugget
20kg MP

This is where I think I might do again what I did the last hop order. Not asking yet, but keep in mind I will be asking for people to act as distribution centres. In other words, its cheaper to send bulk orders over Aus, and then cut it at location for other. Mailage costs are cheaper too locally.

How the money flows is still to be worked out. I dont mind paying up front, but then I weear all the risk if the hops "dont show". Something to mull over too.

Off to check e-mails.

I see some privates I have to answer

Craftbrewer

Perhaps just import yourself? I do that with most everything and save megga bucks....but some of you know that already ;)

:icon_offtopic: Just thought id share something to do with China...

We bought some new plates for the Restaurant today, on the bottom it says "Australian Fine China" "Made in China"

Whats Australian about it????

IMO the 3kg express postage bag for $10 is the most efficient option. If it was me running the show. I would just offer a sampler of 3 x 1KG hops in an express bag. Same cost across all of Oz.

That makes sense to me, anything I import is better done in small quantity's.
I do know about importing stuff from the UK,US and NZ. I suppose Tassie is not importing hey?

i feel like im dying with whatever bloody flu i have so why not buy some hops to make myself feel better.

We'll be buying so much malt, that should compensate. As well as creating hundreds of jobs around Australia in the liver transplant units.

does the $5-$10 worth of hops people might put in most beers really break the bank?

i "only" brew probably twice a month and on these occasions i love going down to my (admittedly very well stocked) LHBS and getting the hops knowing they are good quality and i'll get a great beer with no QC problems from the raw ingredients. to me this, as well as the interaction at the LHBS is worth saving a buck or two here and there.

depends on what brews y9ou make. as Maple pointed out he's just dropped almost 1/2kg into a brew. that adds up. IPAs using 100-200g of hops. etc.

besides its worth a try. if they are an inferior product, then no one will use them again.
