getting a thinner hex nut too. Might give you the valuable couple of mm's you need

just used a nut 1/2 the size. will test in the morning

i dont think the thinner nut will solve the problem, you could proabably stick something thicker than it just next to it , as there is a big possibility of it just colapsing again

I'm more intrigued how a 12" S/S plate can collapse in the first place? I've got the same FB and I reckon I could stand on it with no ill effects.

If the fb is causing so much grief what about going for a circle of braid? A T piece, a dead easy hooker and some hose clamps and you're away.

seriously looking at Zwickels setup so i can heat the tun.

i've got a really cool tun on loan to be a backup in case my tinkerings were insufficient.
i might try to get some phone pics/video tomorrow.

if my tun does work, then i've got no excuse but to brew 2 different beers, or really fill the fermenter up to 78L and pitch lager yeast like crazy. Might have to do 2 boils though

after a perfect mill:

spare tun to the rescue:

it's a borrowed home made mill and it rips through the grist with ease. i think the secret is the bigger rollers.

Tanget,
your not on your own, my digital temp gauge buggered up when I moved it from the HLT to Mash tun. I dumped in 4 litres of chilled water before realising that the bloody thing was reading almost 20 C high, then had to fill the tun to groaning with hot water to get it to 63ish C. Then broke my mash paddle, then filled the tun with sparge water with the tap still on. Then discovered that my mate had left his VB Midstrenghts after drinking my commercial stocks. Some days just aren't there for brewing. Now trying to boil the volume down to 20ish litres (will take some time). I'm going to drink the VB Mids to re-focus my rage.

Do you have a steam cleaner, Winkle?

I buggered up my water addition a couple of brews ago - added it at mash temp instead of strike temp. I can't remember where I read about it but someone mentioned using their steam cleaner to bring up the mash temp. I fired it up and it worked a proper treat, brought the temp up quick smart without having a watery mash.

Unfortunately no, nor do I have an immersion element although I was desperately wishing for one a few hours ago :( .

Not quite hell but one of my hoses blew off its QD fitting during today's brew and of course I dived in for the save. Pity it was boiling hot and I got my hand.... I think the subsequent cold water treatment should see me keep the skin but its a bit sore :chug:
