Why has Nick JD got the arse?

Just noticed that Nick JD has been banned. What have I missed? Always seemed a reasonable poster to me, and would help out new brewers with good advice. If Nick has got the flick, some of you other arse clowns might be on the way out too. Vale Nick.

    Viewing new AHB with Ipad

I usually use an Ipad version 1 when perusing AHB. Since the site upgrade I can not see Youtube videos when people link to them in a thread. All I see is a big blank space. If I use my laptop there is no problem. Is there something I need to configure in my Ipad or in AHB to correct this? Cheers

Using Mr Malty For Top Cropped Yeast

Hello All. I have some top cropped 1469 yeast that I would like to use. I cropped it 7 days ago. When trying to use Mr Malty to calculate if I need to step it up, I was not sure which choice to use, such as "Repitching From Slurry". I would assume this is the closest choice. Would you then reset...

Recirculating From Kettle To Plate Chiller To Kettle.

Hello All, I recently purchased a plate chiller, Mash Master 30 plate. I think most people, when chilling from the kettle, run the wort from the kettle, single pass through the plate chiller into the fermenter. I have been thinking of recirculating (using a March pump) from the kettle, through...

How Much Yeast Slurry To Use

I harvest a few jar fulls of yeast slurry from my fermenter when using liquid yeasts such as 1469 and 1968. They sit in the fridge sometimes for 6 months before I use them in a starter. My question is, how much slurry should I use in a 1 litre or 1 1/2 litre starter? Also, if brewing a 23 litre...

Using Water From The Hot Water Service In My Hlt

Hello Brewers, At the moment I use water from my water tanks (with a temp of about 12C), and heat it up to strike temp in my HLT. Would there be any ill effects if I was to use water from my electric hot water service, which is supplied from the same water tanks? It would mean only having to...

How Was Beer Served In The Old Days?

Was thinking the other day about how beer was served in Australia years ago. Did we use those beer engine thingies the poms still use for their real ales? I suppose what I am getting at is, before gassing up everything with CO2, how did we get the beer from the cellar to the bar? Also, was the...

How To Sterilise A Beer Filter Cartridge

Hello, I bought myself a beer filter a fair while ago and I am going to use it for the first time. The cartridge is a 1 micron absolute pleated filter, the ones with the purple/pink ends. My question is, what is the best way to sterilise it? I thought I would soak it in Starsan and let it dry...

Measuring Water Ph With Ph Meter.

I have a cheap pH meter I bought of Ebay. When I calibrate it, I use Labserv 4 and 9 buffer solutions. Using the 4 buffer solution, the pH meter indicates 4, when using the 9 buffer solution, the pH meter indicates 8.9. Close enough for me. But when I measure the pH of my tap water at home, the...

    Reusing A Yeastcake

Happy new year to all AHB'ers, Tomorrow I will be brewing a Dr Smurtos Golden Ale. I already have one in the fermenter that is ready to be kegged. I am thinking I will brew and then drop the wort from the kettle into the drained fermenter, with the yeast cake still in there. Is this a good idea...

Hop Sock - Who Uses One?

Hello All, have been toying with the idea of puchasing a hop sock. Mainly because of the amount of hop debris I seem to collect in my fermenter when transferring from the kettle. I thought it may be an easier option compared to a strainer of some sorts in the kettle. Also, I wouldn't lose as...

How Much Sugar To Prime A Pale Ale

Hello All, I have made an English Pale Ale. Most will be kegged but I will have some left over which I will bottle in 750ml long necks/tallies,. The question I am asking is how much sugar do I need to use to prime the bottles to give me a carbonation level suitable to an English Pale Ale? Thank You

    Removing Grain From Mash Tun

Hello everyone. I use a converted 50 litre keg for my mash tun. When mashing is complete, I lift the keg off its frame and empty the spent grain out. I have been thinking about better ways to do this without lifting the keg. What I am thinking of trying is using a Wet/Dry vacuum cleaner to suck...

Difference Between Hop Plugs And Pellets.

Hello, could anyone tell me the difference between hop pellets and plugs. Are they made differently, do plugs taste and smell better? If a recpie calls for plugs and you only have pellets, how do you adjust the recipe? Also, I have seen on overseas brewing sites that hop flowers are used alot...

    Hop Debris Into Fermenter

Hello All, has anyone got any ideas to how stop the hop debris I get when transferring wort from my kettle to my fermenter? The kettle has a pick up tube at the side of the kettle about an inch from the bottom. When I remove my immersion chiller I have tried whirlpooling, but the wort...

    What Base Malt To Buy

Hello All, I have purchased some air tight drums which I intend to store grain in. I mainly brew English bitter/Pale Ales and the odd lager. What grain would people suggest I buy in bulk? I will probably buy a 25 kg bag of base malt and a few kg's of specialty malts. Also, is it worth paying the...

    How To Store Grain.

Hello all, I am new to this forum and also to all grain brewing. I am wondering how other brewers store their uncrushed grain. The nearest place I can buy grain is the Grain and Grape, which is about 2 hours drive away. I was thinking of buying 25kg bags and then crushing them as I require. Will...
