I'm going out of my way to completely ignore the world cup. I don't give a shit the other 99% of the time, why should I care now?

The only impact it will have on me is making the transit through JNB airport even more of a pain in the arse than usual. But hopefully the increased volume of bagge will improve the odds of mine being stolen.

it's going to be pretty hard to ignore in 2022 if Australia gets the world cup then...

My first batch of hefeweisen on 3068 should be 2 weeks old in the bottle for the first Aussie match, that should go down well in the wee hours of the morning

Given it's in the middle of winter I think a nice dry stout will do the job. I just cracked the first of my variation of the 4 shades of stout from the recipe DB and it's a cracker, lovely roasted malt and coffee flavours. Perfect for drinking on the lounge late at night in PJs, dressing gown and ugg boots (there's a lovely image for everyone).

Havnt brewed for the event, but i will find plenty to drink!

getting way too excited!

going to be at the mcg next monday to see NZ get the send off they deserve!

I may tune in to the World Diving Championship but only to poke fun at the girls protecting their crotches and to compile a list of nominations for the oscars. :beerbang:

sad...but so true.

I do think Australia will lose to germany, but I thought the same thing about the japan game. If we do lose, I don't think we get flogged. 22 men and a round ball, anything can happen.

Exactly my point.

22 men but only 1 ball between them.

How many guys are there on an AFL field with only one ball between them?

A few more than football I'd say

Droll, I like it. You are very dry Dr S.

But I think its time we all started playing nice again. I will watch most games and get my four year itch scratched. Then sink back into soccer ignorance again.

The game in Australia hasn't been the same since the Wollongong Wolves were omitted from the national league. Wollongong_Wolves_FC_logo_F236073CD6_seeklogo_com.gif

the national league.
Those WERE the good old days.... I used to run a security mob that worked at the Bob Jane Stadium with South Melbourne Hellas !!!

Fun fun fun... until daddy took the flares away !

Wollongong is putting together a bid for the A-league i hope its successful.

Been suggesting and planning for quite a while, but I sadly doubt they will be successful. I doubt they would ever get the financial / sponsorship support needed and crowd numbers would never be large enough to supplement the club income. You only have to look at the plight of the Illawarra Steelers, the financial woes of the basketballing Hawks and the demise of the Wolves to show Wollongong is not big enough to support national teams against stand alone clubs in Brisbane, Adelaide and of course Sydney & Melbourne.

But we still remember those back to back NSL championships in 2000 and 2001. Glory days.

Come on Australia !

For local interest I'll be following the following stolen off the Illawarra Mercury site.

The 2010 World Cup dreams of Wollongong junior Mile Sterjovski are over after the 30 year-old was left out of Pim Verbeeks preliminary 31-man squad for next months tournament in South Africa. Three South Coast football products were included in the squad with Nowras Adam Federici one of four goalkeepers named today.

Socceroo veterans Scott Chipperfield, from Bellambi and Albion Parks Luke Wilkshire were included but Sterjovski, who played in all four games in 2006, will watch the tournament from home. The Socceroos coach praised Chipperfields goal scoring form for Swiss club FC Basel, calling him a great player with a great mentality while Wilkshires versatility will make him invaluable in South Africa. Luke can play anywhere, said Verbeek.

Federici, who plays for Reading in the English Championship, is a good chance of playing in his first World Cup after Verbeek indicated he would take three goal-keepers to South Africa.

Glad someone got it

I lived in the UK for 2 years and played soccer almost every Friday night after work - rain, hail, snow and the occasional ray of sunshine. Had a ball...... pun intended.

I enjoy playing and watching the game but jaysus, it's an easy target for sarcastic bastards like myself.

And the mad one-eyed soccer fans bite on damn near anything it seems. :p

I think football in australia is a very easy target. The diving, the acting...it's just not cricket. As a football fan, I can't really stand the faking, it is quite frustrating, similar to when they kick the ball on the outskirts of the oval to wind down the time in the last quarter in an AFL match - noone enjoys it.

But as for the one-eyed soccer fans biting...well, atleast they aren't like port power fans, which don't have enough teeth to really bite on anything... :p

Cheers
Phil
