Put my position up front, I have been a AG convert for over 18 months plus and have never looked back, I just love the sport of AG brewing. Some say I'm an AG snob because I can't bring myself to doing anything less which sort of brings me to the question " What stops you from AG brewing?". Mine is I've got too much beer to drink to justify brewing more at the moment, which is a killer as it is perfect brewing weather now.

Been chatting to a few HBer's lately both K&K and AGer's and been getting a number of different answers to the question. The common answer I have had from AGer's is they don't have the time to do it, so they do K&K instead. The common answer I get from K&Ker's is it cost too much to set up, it looks too hard, and why bother.

So I just wanted to put it out there to hear everyone elses thoughts

what stops me?

the thought of lifting 4 or 5kgs of grain out of my BIAB kettle. not sure if the bag, or my arms, can take it. partial mash it is for me, for now. anyway, the improved efficiency i got from my brew this morning meant i added less extract than normal. and no sugar at all.

That was my excuse for a while. I live in a townhouse with no shed or anything and figuring out what to do with kettle, burner, gas bottle, mash tun, etc. stopped me from going all grain.

Then I bought a 30L urn and non-destructively converted the existing esky into a mash tun and that got me started. But it looks more and more like the spare room is going to be taken over by beer and/or brewing equipment in the near future.

Man do you need help lifting that heavy bottle of home brew?

If you can brew with a can and move around the pot and fermentor you can lift a bag of grain out of a kettle. Even if you were severely disabled unless you lived on your own a wet bag of grain does not weigh more then a baby so your significant other could do it for you. Notice I used the politically correct jargon of the USA.

I am not trying to talk you into anything but do not give out miss information about how hard it is to lift the brain bag when brewing the Biab style.

at the moment the only thing stopping me is my laziness to fire up in the ****** weather we have been having but its changing for the better , summers comin !!

It's difficult to get grain in any of my LHBSs. If it weren't for that I'd be doing a brew right now

+1 on that. Spent the last 2 years moving around a bit and I simply don't have the space (damn rental accomodation <_< ). Knowing that I'll be staying put for a few years AND building my own place next year means that AG in 2009 is very much on the books B) . I'll make sure I build enough space.

running out of ingredients, fermenters or weather

Usually nothing, I find it worth every cent and every second of time... but sometimes it is SWMBO that stops me with other plans/events!

A mate of mine told me if SWMBO was giving me grief to put the wedding video on... but watch it backwards. That way you walk away from the alter and go back to the pub with your mates!

And - No empty kegs
+1

Its all a matter of priorities. Brewing is what I do!. My wife lay-buyed me a Gas RC car for my birthday. When I went in to pick it up the bloke at the shop started going through all the stuff I would need to do to keep this thing going. While I was amazed at the technology in this thing it was becoming apparent that I just dont have the time to put into this thing, so I cancelled the lay-buy.
It all comes down to what u want to do. AG brewing takes up a lot of time. Not just on brew day but all the planning and the learning. If u dont have a burning desire to learn about AG brewing and how it works I can't see why u would bother. The bonus for me is I get to drink good beer at the end of the process.
